I have just installed one of these graphiccards in mu computer, and really enjoy using it so far. And that's even before i have installed the softmodded files that will turn my 9800 SE to an 9800 Pro.
I have only 4x AGP with my current mainboard, and figuring out if an investment on an new motherboard is neccessary now.
Is it an big increase in FPS with 8x AGP?
Not really. The way current GPUs do texturing and data transfer over AGP, 8X isn't really a huge benefit to performance. It's nice to run it if you can though.

MOLLY AND POPPY!
Hi fellas , great forum with loads of good info . Any one able to give a step by step guide to softmodding this card? Got 4.2 drivers in now and its running fine , followed links in previous posts but not sure which files to grab or what to do with em any help greatly appreciated.
http://www.ocfaq.com/softmod/download.php
Grab the ati2mtag.sys file and use it to replace the copy in Windows\System32 and Windows\System32\dllcache
You'll need to use a bootdisk or the Recovery Console to do the copying, it can't be done while Windows is running.
If you don't fancy that, get the top Softmodded driver package and install that instead

MOLLY AND POPPY!
Checkerboards all over the place on mine but clocks like a demon - 420 core and 366 memory
Excellent card IMO and no power problems in my Shuttle either (SB61G2)
I have an SN45G with the Hercules 9800 SE AIW, and have the same problem. Tonight I'll be building and testing a delay circuit, so if it works I'll do a quick guide to fixing the problem. I'm quite interested in whether the 250W PSU from Shuttle in this model will fix the problem (but I ain't forking out £40 until I know for sure) so if anyone has tested this, please reply!
Later...
Okay, having put a bit of work into designing a simple delay circuit, and making it with my dad, I'm now writing this from my SN45G with the Hercules Radeon 9800 SE working perfectly; at least in simple 2D display mode (with the default drivers from the bundled CD.) I can make no claim about the stability during gaming as I've not yet tried it out - I'm still formatting partitions and installing neccessary stuff.
The circuit is fairly simple and we just modified one of the PSU leads to begin supplying current after (just under) 2 seconds using 7 components:
1MΩ Resistor
100kΩ Resistor
470μF Capacitor
10A/24V rated Relay, 12V Coil
BC107C Transistor
1N4148 Diode
The power for the circuit was taken from the 12V line (yellow wire). The 100kΩ resistor and 470μF capacitor made up an RC series and the 1MΩ resistor was the drain for the capacitor. The potential across the capacitor was used to switch the transistor which was not protected by a resistor as we're dealing with very small voltage and current. This connected another rail from 12V to a parallel arrangement of relay coil and diode through the collector/emitter of the transistor and to the 12V's paired ground line (black), energising the coil and connecting the split we made in the 5V line (red).
I appreciate that this is either incoherent or just plain nonsense, so I'll make a proper circuit diagram tomorrow sometime. The circuit is very simple though, so only basic electronics knowledge is required.

my brother got one of these when we got them in stock @ work for the first time. Softmodded it to hell and its an awesome card for the money. Cheap as chips with a great TV picture quality and the features for the price are outstanding.
Great review as well covered everything perfectly.

Hi!
I've just upgraded my graphics card to Hercules' AIW 9800 SE. Softmoded with some artifacts - still working on it (but that's something for a different string).
I played Homeworld 2 and X2 the Threat on my previous card (Creative's Ti 4200 64MB) with no problems. Once I installed the 9800SE (even before softmodding) I started to get "hiccup" effects in the trailer scenes - there are very short but quite visible pauses.
Has anyone seen anything like that? What could be the cure?
Some details:
MSI-648 Max Mobo
Latest SiS AGP drivers installed
P4 @2.8Mhz
1GB RAM
nothing overclocked
Thanks!
might get this instead of a 9600xt, goto check the prices 1st though
NenMaster, you might want to look at a nvidia 5900, they mod into 5950Ultra's !
£130 ish (5950U are worth about 350)
have a quick gander through this section for deals on these cards.

but arnt the gf5x series not as good when AA and AF are enabled?
the 9800se is very apealing as i wanted a 9600xt, but even if it doesnt softmod i got me a 9600xt ;P wth a tv card (was gonna buy 1 neway)
wow my gfx card has just gone... might invest in one...
hehe, dont have enough funds for a new 1

Did you ever draw up the circuit diagram for this? I'm perfectly able to solder parts to a circuit board, given a diagram; but completely unable to *design* a circuit based on your "incoherent nonsense".
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but shouldn't it be possible to just put a large capacitor into the 5v line, one large enough to delay the current for a second or so until its full, and thus not needing any other components? Or am I an idiot?
