    Best way to make coffee

    Hi all,

As my week of 24hr tech support hell continues I've been drining a lot of my GF's fantastic Tanzanian coffee, sent direct by the headmaster of a school she worked in on the slopes of Kilimanjaro.

Anyway, I've been contemplating, what's the best way to make a normal cup of coffee?

My favourite so far is filter, we've got an espresso machine for diluted americano stuff, a cafetierre, even a perculator (although I'm not 100% sure I know how to use it properly), but the filter seems best.

    What do you think guys?

    Andrew.

I voted instant because I rarely drink any 'proper' coffee any more. If you buy the supermarket gold stuff it doesn't taste too offensive, and it keeps me awake at work. I almost never drink coffee at home any more for some reason, I prefer tea, but at work it has to be coffee.

I don't like cafetiere coffee much TBH, it's alright but I always find it has a slight oily texture. Out of all of your options I'd have filter. When I lived on my own I used to set up my filter machine beside my bed at night, then when my alarm went off I'd turn it on, hit snooze, then wake up ten minutes later to some deadly strong stuff (used to use about three scoops in the filter ).

I went for filter machine coffee, though I don't own a filter machine.

I just love the smell of coffee filling the house in the mornig... it smells like victory.

Proper espresso machine (15pump pressure)- but the rest is made up of hot milk in the form of a Latte or Cappucinno - using the steamer that's part of my espresso machine. Very very nice.

Filter; I like espresso sometimes, and I don't really have a problem with cafetieres, but I prefer the output from my Braun filter maker.

I have to use espresso coffee with my coffee machine (delonghi) - like lavazza (sp?) or illy in a small tin is very nice.

I am such a coffee snob that I enjoy different ways at different times, but it has to be just right either way. Cafetieres are great if you do it right. Most people make the mistake of tipping boiling water on it. Boiling or just boiled water spoils coffee. Must be off the boil, around 85 degree's. Thinking of getting a kettle with a temp reading but can't find one. Has to be freshly grinded too. I have 15 different types of been in my kitchen at the moment. I grind my own and have been known to by the beans green and roast them on special occations. It's just an amazing taste and hit. Yum. Instant tastes like mud to me but drink it at work to stay awake.

Percolators make the best damn coffee you'll ever taste when done right but they take ages to make. If you like stronger coffee (or espresso) a percolator will make a fantastic cuppa from a v small amount of grounds. I've had to stop drinking filter coffee because of all the palpitations

I have an espresso machine, filter paper, the works, but absolutely nothing beats a cup of coffee from my large cafetierre. It's like the holy grail of coffee. I have a small cafetierre but it doesn't taste half as good. I use the huge 5 person cafetierre for a single cup

It sure is mate. People just don't understand that it's a fine art. Machines can do it all for you, but once you master using a cafetierre you with reach coffee zen. After all, cafetierre's are the closest method to the orginal way of making coffee. Of course if you want the real deal, see how the turks do it

It's not as easy as it seems though. Good cafetierre coffee is a combination of the right beans freashly grinded for the job, the right water temp (so, so sooo important - not boiling), the water to coffee ratio and the right length of brewing time.

Plain espresso is good but it's possible to get too carried away with tuning the brew...
