Ram Issues

Got a new set of equipment from scan today (visited their showroom while I was in the area) which included a i7 2600k, asus p8z68-v pro motherboard and some Corsair ram modules (2x 4gb) - http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb-(...-8-24-xmp-150v

Now, I've spent most of the evening upgrading various hard drives, raid controllers etc but finally got windows reinstalled and noticed that it was only reporting 4gb of ram (it is a 64bit install). I've checked the bios which reports the same so I figured dead stick of ram. I removed one stick, booted back into the bios - 4gb installed. Swapped the sticks over, booted back into the bios and 4gb installed. Put the another stick back in (slots a2 and b2 as showing in the motherboard manual) and still only 4gb.

I have to admit I'm lost now. I guess it could be a motherboard issue but no post errors or faults found in the bios.

Anyone got any ideas or methods of checking further?

Any newer BIOS revisions? Other than that, all i can say is Asus have had a lot of chump boards since the launch of SB, a lot of the P67 boards had RAM issues at launch.

EDIT: hmm, perhaps try the mem-ok button to see if it can find the ram itself.

Just to close this. Machine is now built and working. Ram issue was resolved by moving both sticks to the black slots (A1 and B1) rather than the recommend blue slots. Not sure of the impact of this but at least I have 8Gb now.

1 DVD & an SSD, looks that way to me anyway.

10 hard drives, 1 ssd and a dvd. SSd is mounted on the base by the psu.

Very nice rig. I presume you figured out I/O bandwidth wasn't limiting? I think Intel provided enough with the full speed PCI-E 2.0 links with sandy bridge, but I hadn't worked out the numbers.

I cant use the pcie x1 slots but bandwidth shouldn't be an issue with the 3 pcix16 slots (running in x8/x8/x4 setup at the moment)

Certainly no problem for the graphics (2x8 straight to the CPU). It's how the x4 slot (which goes to the southbridge) is shared that's interesting - I think it's not a problem at all but I don't know how Intel share the links between sata 6gbps etc. The p55 chipset had a horrible limitation.

Yeah, i think the lanes that run off the PCH this time around are spec 2.0 instead of 1 the first time round however?

you will get a 4x speed unless the pciex1 slots are filled at which point the bandwidth is shared reducing the 4x slot to a 1x speed. At least, thats how I read it worked.

Have you sorted out your OC problems?

Nope. Running stock with turbo mode on at the moment. Reset and repasted (is that a word ) the cpu cooler last night as it was hitting 50 degrees with a quarter load. Now, it hits 50 degrees with a full load. Haven't tried since then but since I was having issues with the auto oc at 4.4Ghz, then I hope that might have been the issue.

I have some time over the weekend to spend on it, plus upgrading the nas box and putting my old components into my old antec 900 case for my housemate. Just need to get a psu from somewhere for him.

Overclock to 4.5ghz has been sorted thanks to a links document on here.Temps are below 60 degrees so I guess there is room for more but not felt the need yet. Just finished restoring my backup files from my old drives and then upgraded the nas box to 4tb's today for backup. Just got to copy stuff over to that now. Machine is pretty quick though now.
