    Z68 + Nvidia GPU + dual Monitors

Is anyone running dual monitors (one off the GPU one off the Mobo) on a Z68? does it work, what happens, looking to upgrade and don't want to run both monitors off the GPU as it stops the GPU from idling properly. This will affect my mobo choice as i'd not want to sacrifce the x16 on the main PCI-E slot.

I'm just wondering the same thing myself, from the point of view of allowing my add-on card to use its full resources on my main monitor (mainly in games) while the on-board takes care of the secondary (not used in games).

i've had word from nvidia that you must turn it off (but this could be a stock answer), i'm waiting now for ivb with x16 pci-e3 + x4 pci-e2. Although there is an asus board that claimsyou can ro 16+4 but you lose usb3 and esata which i'm not going to use anyway,

i read somewhere that you can't use both.... have you not tried to do it yourself?
lucid virtu needs to be on the gpu (d-mode) i believe (but that's not answering your question)

Re: Z68 + Nvidia GPU + dual Monitors

win 7 should allow for multiple gpus of different types to be installed unlike xp and maybe vista, but nvidia say no, but then they say no to practically everything, main concern is that the nvidia card will detect the other card and disable physx.
don't have the hardware yet, it would have dictated to a degree which board I went for, if it works I can go for a much less feature rich board, only need 4 sata, no usb, no esata (have 5TB servr at home). PCI would be nice, it helps to constrain the decision.

Thanks for the info. The last thing I want is issues with drivers making life hard, so that helps me make the decision on my new build. No point having the onboard graphics for me then.

other than giving you access to quicksync, which given the better quality than cuda encoding, might be useful with the digital media that's being generated from my phone, camera etc.

Scan told me that it would work, but it will probably be a while before I find out whether my machine will do it.

I agree it should work, ivb will make it a no brainer I think, I suspect there will be issues though, so I'm waiting till then

Re: Z68 + Nvidia GPU + dual Monitors

My mistake... last night, I accidentally had my TV connected (onboard HDMI) switch on and my monitor (DVI on XfX 8600 Fatal1ty) act as duplicate screen.

so it does work.. which is a good thing i guess as the temp card i have, the 8600, only has 2 DVI and not hdmi so it's good to be able to leave the hdmi cable on the onboard connection whenever i want to watch movies on the tv.

Re: Z68 + Nvidia GPU + dual Monitors

I don't suppose you could try it as an extended desktop could you? Although the real issue for me is what is doing the work, as the GTX470 will not idle with two screens connected, i'm assuming that i also will not idle with two screens being drawn, so the ideal solution is one screen drawn by the card and one by the igpu. Can you monitor your igpu in some way, would gpu-z let you do that?

Re: Z68 + Nvidia GPU + dual Monitors

yes - it works as extended screen as well with monitor as main and tv as secondary.. and vice versa. altho i have not worked on the machine long enough to test temp. i merely either switch to duplicate or extended (if the machine doesn't pick up the tv straight away) and then switch to tv so i can watch my movie.

Cool, and this is with one screen plugged into the card and one into the mobo, and virtu is in discrete mode? Thanks for the info.

Re: Z68 + Nvidia GPU + dual Monitors

I've changed my virtu setup to i-mode. one website tested both and i-mode gets a couple of frames less but it's the power saving when i'm in windows just doing normal browsing that appealed to me (whether i am actually saving or not... i don't know) but i only have WoW game installed at the mo anyway so no big deal for me for those few fps loss under i-mode.
