    Re: Fantasy recommendations

Haven't seen anyone mention it so I will; I cannot recommend Patrick Rothfuss's Kingkiller Chronicle series highly enough.

I've also read a lot of Robin Hobb's work and 12 out of 14 of the Wheel of Time series and recommend them both too.

    Anyone got any other suggestions?

The hobbit is a very good book.
As is the Lord of the Rings trilogy

How about Skulduggery pleasant or the Narnia books?

Forgotten Realms aye! My personal favorite is the Elminster series (excluding the "Elminster's Daughter"). I also particularly enjoyed the following series (if by any chance somebody is into the D&D / AD&D history).

Avatar Series : "Shadowdale", "Tantras", "Waterdeep", "Prince of Lies" and "Crucible: The Trial of Cyric the Mad".

War of the Spider Queen Series : "Dissolution", "Insurrection", "Condemnation", "Extinction", "Annihilation" and "Resurrection".

Chronologically followed by The Lady Penitent Series : "Sacrifice of the Widow", "Storm of the Dead" and "Ascendancy of the Last".

The Haunted Lands Series : "Unclean", "Undead", "Unholy" and "Realms of the Dead".

The Erevis Cale Trilogy : "Twilight Falling", "Dawn of Night" and "Midnight's Mask".

Chronologically followed by The Twilight War Series : "Shadowbred", "Shadowstorm" and "Shadowrealm".

As recommended fantasy I list also the following : "Planescape : Torment (by Ray and Valerie Vallese)", "Warcraft archive : [Day of the Dragon], [Lord of the Clans], [The last guardian] and [Of blood and honor]", "Warcraft archive : [War of the Ancients]".

Avatar series was good.. also enjoyed the 2 books after on Cyric

I loved Ravenloft too for some reason, the idea of fallen good guys resurrected as dark lords and trapped in their own domains was just such an awesome concept.. esp as each land was like a haunting reminder of their past.

    Strahd ( Vampire , Azalin ( Lich ) ( sp ? ) was esp fun
As was Lord Soth ( yes a dark knight )

    Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series

Also his Dresden Files if you like a bit of noir detective novels, now with added fantasy.

Elizabeth Moon: Her Paksenarrion series is brilliant

    Re: Fantasy recommendations

+1 on Dresden & the Codex series, great stuff, and Dresden Files are occasionally on TV, a pretty good crossover if you ask me.

But I really came to post my thanks to those who recommended Feist's Magician series, I just finished book one and have another 27 to go on my Kindle, should keep me busy for most of this year :0

    First class, really first class.
    Cheers, David

The empire series and riftwar series are really good. Silverthorn (?) is a a bit like the two towers. Serpentwar one was quite good too. They are just too familar after a bit.

    Re: Fantasy recommendations

Anything written by Neil Gaiman is very very good. American Gods has a more adult feel and neverwhere is slightly more lighthearted but still plenty of adult content and themes. The first is about the idea that gods are created from worship, and modern day people worship things like TV and the internet. These gods end up clashing with the old gods. The latter is about a man who gets stuck in the london below london, full of magic and old worldyness. Not sure I'd have read them if someone had described them to me like this, but I assure you they are wonderful.

A Song of Ice and Fire is a great book series to check out, the TV show is awesome too, follows along pretty accurately to the books.

Just finished Robin Hobb's Farseer book 1 "Assassins Apprentice" Loved it. I've been searching for something, ever finishing some of the larger epics such as the Wheel of Time and feel that I could get my teeth into this series.

If youre into the 40k stuff, the Black Library has some fantastic reads. The horus heresy series is at 20-someting books now, with a mix of authors so a selection of writing styles. If only they'd stop messing us about with the paperback sizes XD The Ciaphas Cain novels from them are great too, they have a sense of humour that appeals to me
