    Olease help with ADSL

My mate has a laptop which he wants to connect to the net wirelessly.

It is with Tiscali. He has bought a Belkin Wirless ADSL Router and a Belkin Wireless adapter card for his Laptop.

How does he setup the Router as he has no Ethernet connection on his PC so he cannot connect the router to the laptop. He has installed the wireless adapter card but he cannot get online. All the lights on the router are on as they are supposed to be. How does he set it all up? He has typed in a 192.168....number but he cannot get on the net. Please help if you can. Does he need to have the Router connected to a PC first to set it up? (No ethernet on his laptop)

Thanks if you can help at all.

pretty sure that although he wont get internet access with the wireless he will be able to access the belkin router page

which off the top of my head is 192.168.2.1 thats how i did it yesterday on a job anyway

type ipconfig in run and see what ip it has given him as the router may need reset to be asinged to the 192.168.2.1

So, it can't be done unless the Laptop is connected to the Router with an ethernet cable? No ethernet on laptop!

Do you have a model number? You should find that the wireless access point is 192.168.x.1 - usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.

Configuring it to do security etc. will prove far more problematic.

You may of course find that by default wireless is off. Usually you need Ethernet to configure these things. Why don't you bring it over to your place and do it there? Presumably you have a PC with Ethernet?

did you read what i put above?

I did this job yesterday via wireless.

If he cant get onto the belkin page get him to topye ipconfig in run and if the ip is infact not 192.168.2.1 then it needs a hard reset as ths is what i had to do to get it to work.

But neally all routers now days can be set up via wireless.

Not true, I tried a Netgear (can't remember the model from top of my head) that wouldn't allow you to enable wireless or change any of the settings until you'd configured the router over ethernet.

I've done it with a d-link router before.

They use 192.168.0.1 but my US Robotics uses .1.1
