Can you confirm that the modem is not making the whistling noise? - this is with the 0845 number I posted, yes? Yet you can dial that number from your landline phone plugged into the same phone access point that the XP box's modem is plugged into?

If so, then there is a problem with the modem instalation within windows XP.

I need some of the other questions answering. Such as:
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the modem?
What name is showing up for the modem drivers in 'phone and modem options'?

You can have exactly the same type of problems with PCI and USB DSL modems as the above, believe me.

Also, ethernet DSL conenction isnt the answer for all users either
For some, it scares them away faster than a Frenchman can scaper away from a battle line.

Trickle, It makes the usual high pitched dialing noise but nothing that sounds like a whisle.

I dont have a telephone to try in the socket, all i know is that under 2k it dials fine, Im sure theres a problem with the install under xp but where?

So far i have tryed different USB prots, a powered USB port, 2 usb cables, 3 driver sets.

Yep ive tryed uninstalling and reinstalling the modem.

In phone and modem options i have "SupraMax 56K USB" Attached to COM3.

Ages ago I "upgraded" my loverly win2K install to XP pro and lo and behold... no dial up at all. period.

I gave up and went back to win2k.

A few months later I tried again with a fresh install and all was fine, but then i added the service pack 1 and lost my dial up again!! ... back to win 2k again.

But I've been on XP Pro now for 6 months or so and all fine and dandy. Xp took a while to mature properly it seems.

It doesn't answer your question but it could basically be anything. You tried it in a different slot? Try booting in safe mode and deleting any hidden unused hardware from the system devices (including your modem) and then reinstalling the modem using the correct drivers.

I've had loads of Lucent winmodems and they are great, but very fussy about drivers and there's many flavours out there, use the wrong driver and it works but is all flakey and disconnects all the time, use the right driver version and it's sweet. Could be similar with the modem you have.

    Cheers,

    MM

Apart from suggesting looking for updated drivers I dont know what else to suggest.

You arnt being too clear with your answers. You say "high pitched dialing noises" - not all modems sound the same, but most sound like fax machines/ ZX spectrums.

If the modem fails to do this after dialing then you could try putting a comma before the dial number or after the first 4 digits... perhaps there is a touch of difference between the drivers operating in 2K to XP causing the straw that brakes the cammels back to come down on the grab rate of the line..... clutching and straws springs to mind here :/

You didnt go into depth on how you tried differernt isp's. Did you use their install routines or did you just create the conenction yourself using the XP wizard as some users prefer to do? If you did the latter then that could still possibly explain it - though possibly not if you are getting a "no answer" lack of whistle noise.

You know this is my 7th post and we still arnt 100% clear on whether its getting through to the isp or not

The XP and win2k dial up networking code is near 100% identical. You cant just "recommend win2k" over this.

Myself and sparrow farted around for hours trying to sort out networking and dialup stuff on his 2 winXP systems all to no avail.
Endless problems etc so i suggested he switch to win2k.#
Guess what....2 mins after installing it hey presto, networked both PCs and hes connecting to the internet faster than b4 and pings better also ,so id say it is mucho better than XP even tho you say its so near to XP.
    Thats why I recommend win2k

Attempt to open a connection then when it drops go to start|run and type in eventvwr.msc and then check the windows logs to see if it gives you any messages in there relating to the connection.
