Wireless or homeplug

will be moving shortly am wondering which will be best to use. I'm leaning towards the homeplug , eternet over mains power but am a complete newbie to this, but for that matter haven't used wifi either.

what is the best solution have 2 pcs which will be in different rooms?

If you dont have any mobile devices and you are starting from scratch, then i guess Homeplug is the better option.

personally i would try wireless first, but then i have several wirless devices and a laptop already, so Homeplug would be a pain for me.

No that's what i'm currently using. but wife doesn't want me drilling through walls & cabling under floorboards etc., as i have here

Don't have any wireless devices closest thing is the wifi on my p5k mobo. Someone gave me an old USrobotics 8054 but i think its about 4 years old technology so probably out of date. ?? I could plug it into my speedtouch 510 router.

I'd just get yourself a good access point something by either netgear or linksys, make sure it has mimo! Outfit your laptops and pc's with wifi cards and ebay the speedtouch router. Homeplug is very expensive imo for what it is and I'd opt for the cheaper and what could be argued more convient wireless route.

Wireless is cheaper so long as you don't have a large house or lots of bricks inbetween stuff. I do, and in my case where I'm currently standing with my wireless setup I would have been cheaper to buy ethernet over mains kit, and I'd have a more reliable setup too, something the homeplugs do seem to do very well at (reliability).

Thanks guys,. I can't see wireless being better or cheaper if i have to invest in a new wifi router, although i might get a benefit of a better router cost would probably be:-

makes it pretty close £ wise. Is there not better security & more speed in the homeplug option. Which plays against some improvement perhaps in broadband/router poerformance.
Coming from a cart5 connection i guess i want to minimise :-
a) drop in speeed
b) perhaps a more flaky connectioin.

there are cheaper routers that can do the job out there and cheaper network cards too

Homeplug didn't work for me. YMMV but the support people suggested that maybe I could try moving it to another house(!). Got (draft) 802.11n wireless now and it's fantastic.

DLink have just announced the first of their new 802.11n Draft2 gear. They are the first of to gain Draft2 certification. This should pretty much garantee compatability with the final spec when it eventually gets released.

Homeplugs are good for reliability as has already been mentioned, more so than the wireless setups I've experienced. Very easy to set up as well. I've got a couple of Solwise 85Mbps a while back and they are great, though there are a couple of things to be aware of.

Speeds do drop a bit when plugged in via extension leads and especially ones which are surge protected. Also sometimes they overheat and cut out (at least the ones I seem to, though this only tended to happen in the height of summer.). Can also depend on the wiring of your house as well, but the only real way to know about that is to try them and see.

Yep have seen a few people talk about the quality of the home circuit. we're moving to a new build so i hope that's ok.

i mentioned the USrobotics 8054 earlier. I tried it today with my p5k. Was 1st time i've used wifi.
Good points
was quiet impressed with ease of setup.
browsing was fine no issues slight lag on opening new page to wired but xcertainly ok.
Bad
As expected transfer of 1.5gb file between pcs staed 11min wired started at 5min to 3min very quick. didn't do precise timings but roughly 40% of wired.

as i said earlier 85Mbps is faster ?? than current wifi(8054 is old & may have been bottleneck)

i would go for homeplug has its more relibale and easier to install than a wireless singal

unless someone can recomend a great value/quality/features wifi broadband router (with mimo thanks digit )
& a wifi card for around £70, I'll go for the HomePlug 85Mbps .
