Windows xp activation and update problems

I am having trouble updating and activating windows xp home. I am connected to the internet via BT Broadband wireless home network and normal internet use is fine
When i try to update i get as far as scan for updates then it reports an error that it cannot find server check network settings, the same happens when trying to activate windows.
Downloading from else where and browsing web pages is fine
