    Wireless Network

Just got back after a 2 year exlie from the UK and I need some advice on a network (complete newbie with these things).

I am looking at getting an DSL connection fitted down stairs and then setting up a wireless network so around 5 PC can access it. I would like each PC to be able to interact on the network. (share printers, files etc).

Now the main issue is that my new apartment is above the office, so i want to share my offices connection from upstairs without any of the work PCs being on. (so the Modem/Route combo has to operate with a PC)

So at the moment I guess I need
    ADSL Modem
    Stand alone Router Wireless Route
A few PCMIA and PCI cards for the various computers.

I woud like a 802.11g network (fastest right?)

Anyway any advice or pointing me in the direction of a few good bits of kit would be nice! (Even a good ISP!) At the moment I am stuck using my notebooks internal modem!

    Welcome back to the Uk.

Recommended Isp's: Zen, Nildram or Pipex are my top 3.

In terms of wireless, It's come on in leaps and bounds. You can pick up a router/Adsl Combo for the same sort of money you'd be paying for a standalone router a year ago.
802.11g is the faster for now, however, you need to remember that ALL the machines would effectively be sharing the bandwidth. Is there any chance of hardwiring some of the PC's and leaving the laptop to utilise the wireless bandwidth?

My weapons of choice are a Buffalo WBR-54G router/Acess point, routing into a D-Link DSL300g Cat 5 Modem. A 2 box solution I know, but the Buffalo offered the best security at the time (and still, in my opinion, has yet to be surpassed).

I have buffalo airstation and G54 ethernet converter, works well.
but if you have problems sending information (i.e. you can recieve emails just not send anything) then head to here:
    http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp
and download the latest 'DRTCP' file, and you need to find your adapter settings - can get them either from service provider or Buffalo I think...my bro did that bit so not entirely sure - but i works a treat now

    Thanks guys,

I think i have it all sorted out, the company is paying so all branded solution from Belkin. (I looked at what you were saying, but the boss wanted a one box solution)

ADSL Modem/Router combo and a couple of PCI/notebook Wireless cards.
Read about a few issues as the kit has only been released for a month odd, but that seems standard these days.

I signed up for zen, will be intresting to see how long it takes to get it all done

Now I just need to see If I can get server setup in the first month so I can ask zen to change me to the 8 IP system... That will be my next question in the comings weeks I guess! but first I have to to sell the idea of a office full of Shuttles rather than the big biege box brigade. (and of course I will borrow a shuttle when its all done)

Took 3 days for me! Interestingly enough, the order was still showing "pending confirmation from BT" for the next 2 days. On the end of Day 5 I got a mail from Zen saying my line was now active.

So.... have your kit connected to the Line ASAP!

it all depends how fast the kit gets here! It was ordered last night, the ETA is Friday, but i think they are padding out the date a bit.

At the moment I have to go down to the office to use the Internet which is driving me crazy.

Thanks for the heads up, as soon as it arrives I will get it all setup in.
