    Creating a wireless network?

I am the proud owner of a Shuttle SB61G2 Reflexion and it comes with a wireless lan thingy (sorry my knowledge of wireless networking is limited).

Anyway I have gathered enough parts (mostly from an old Dell) to make another p.c. that I would like to network it to. I'm waiting on a case to be delivered and I'm good to go. At the moment using a lan cable it seems to work fine.

The next step I want to try is to use the wireless capabilities of the shuttle so that I acn put the new p.c. somewhere else in the house.

    1. What do i need to do this? ie what else do i need to buy?

    2. Assuming I would like to be able to send files from the shuttle to the new p.c and vice-versa does this mean i need receiving and transmission for both ends? Or would I just be better off sending files to the new p.c but not receiving? a kind of one way conversation setup.

    3. Lastly, any other suggestions for a 2 p.c setup like this? I saw the old parts lying around and reckoned it would be useful to do something with it all. File server, game server? I've never done a home network before so its all new

    Suggestions greatly appreciated!

    thanks,

    1) All you need is two compatible wireless cards, most of them are any i think.

    2) The network will allow you to send and recieve files from each pc, as well as browse/share printers/internet etc etc.

    3) Pass

    edit:/ ^^ very basic discripion

If the shuttle already has a wireless card you'll just need another for the other box then.

All cards will allow you to both send and recieve so thats no problem.

it doesn't have to be a card - you can get usb wireless "keys" (like usb memory sticks).

you might find that your range (distance between the 2 pcs) might be quite limited without a router, but try it without first - could save you some dough.

I found that setup was pretty much as if I was using a wired network.

There is a setting that you will probably have to use iirc in the network properties box - you want to make your pcs use an adhoc network (they don't need a router then)

ok would this be the kind of thing you are talking about? click the link twice. here

bung it into a free usb slot and she's good to send and receive at 11mbps?

[edit] also what is the transfer equivalent of 11mbps?

simple maths (11,000.000 / 8)/1,000,000 = 1.35MB per sec? does that look right?

so 54mpbs would be 5 * 1.35 which would be 6.9MB per sec. hmmm. wonder if its worth the extra cash....... [/edit]

    yeah, that would do it.

i've got an x-micro version which I use I don't have any complaints.

you might have to shop around to get a good deal.
