NETGEAR RangeMax Next Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router- 270 Mbps

I’ve had enough of my Belkin router giving annoying time outs when refreshing server lists and throwing a strop when trying to run P2P progs so looking for a new ADSL router and been recommended the above. Any thoughts on it at all?

Also where to get one for a decent price?

    Cheers kind folk.

Re: NETGEAR RangeMax Next Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router- 270 Mbps

It's probably worth having a proper ferret around. Usually at least one supplier is doing a bundle with either a USB or PCI card. Even if you don't need one immediately, you'd probably get a few quid for it here or on ebay.

    Regards...

Re: NETGEAR RangeMax Next Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router- 270 Mbps

I notice the Netgear Webby just says this is 'Draft n' yet there are 3 different 'Draft n' standards now, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0.

There also does not seem to have been any recent firmware upgrades, what flavour of 'Draft n' is this router?

would a router like this be as good as a linksys with DD-WRT? (specifically the wireless capabilities)

Re: NETGEAR RangeMax Next Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router- 270 Mbps

I got mine from Misco with a PCI Draft N adapter for £95 - may be worth calling.

Had a couple of probs - dropping connection/dropping wireless, but support was actually reasonably helpful sorting this.... touch wood!

Re: NETGEAR RangeMax Next Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router- 270 Mbps

I've just ordered the DG834N and the PCI card to go with it. I'm hoping to use it with Be Pro shortly. I paid £145.38 for both the Netgear DG834N (£83.94) and the WN311B Desktop Adapter (£54.40) plus a few quid for next day delivery. Purchased from Broadbandbuyer.

Broadbandbuyer are doing a bundle of the DG834N Router with the WN121T Wireless-N USB adapter for £97.59 inc.

Re: NETGEAR RangeMax Next Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router- 270 Mbps

I got it through today from Expansys for about 80 odd quid delivered.

It's up and running and wow! I couldn't get on the net for the last few days at home because the Belkin kept dropping my connection within seconds but this seems fine so far! Plus it has connected me to the network quicker (2880kbps instead of 1800ish).

Very happy so far and a piece of p*ss to set up.

Re: NETGEAR RangeMax Next Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router- 270 Mbps

I got my DG834N yesterday and connected it to my soon-to-be-terminated Nildram line (i'm changing to Be in a couple of days). It connected very easily BUT you have to be connected via an Ethernet cable to run the configuration wizard. This was a total pain for me as my main PC is at one end of my home and my main phone line is at the other end. I usually connect via wireless.

Anyway, I used my work laptop to setup the DG834N router via an Ethernet cable. Sync speed was comparable to my Draytek Vigor 2600We, 2700G, 2800G and my USR router.

Once the DG834N was connected I set up the WN311B Desktop Adapter in my PC. It is supposed to connect at up to 270Mbs but the performance I get varies from 1Mbs to 107Mbs. It fluctuates all the time even though the antenna is in the same location as my previous WiFi cards antenna and the DG834N is in the same location as all my previous routers. I am very disappointed with the WN311B Desktop Adapter. It is a waste of £54 and i'll be going back to my D-Link Super-G card. The DG834N doesn't support Super-G (108Mbs) but i'll still get 54Mbs. So, all in all, I would advise AGAINST buying the WN311B Desktop Adapter. Just use your existing 802.11g card and you'll be fine and save yourself some money.

Back to the DG834N. I made a fatal error and thought I had trashed my router. I tried to flash the firmware over a wireless link! In fact, I made several cock-ups: the firmware I was trying to flash the router with was the same as the firmware already on the router! The process started well enough but some way through the WiFi connection dropped! From then on I couldn't talk to the router. I tried a factory reset and that still didn't work. Netgear have 24/7 support so I called an 0870 number and spoke to someone in the states. We went through a 'hard' factory-reset procedure but it still didn't work. The power light just flahsed red and green. During my time on the phone to Netgear support I reconnected one of my Draytek's and found a Netgear recovery executable from a Google search. The Netgear support engineer concluded that my DG834N was toast! He advised me to return it for an exchange.

After the support call I tried the Netgear recovery software and managed to rescue my DG834N. I then downloaded DMT tool and have successfully sync'd at the highest speed i've ever managed on ADSL Max. I'm waiting for Netgear support to send me an email so that I can advise them of this Netgear utility that is freely available from their own site to recover routers with corrupted firmware!

All in all, the DG834N is a fabulous router and enhanced significantly with DMT Tool. The user interface is a bit basic and lots of stuff is hidden away and quite hard to find. The wireless speed rating is fanciful at best. Even when I had the router within two feet of the WN311B Desktop Adapter I still couldn't connect at 270Mbs.

So, a big thumbs up for the DG834N router, a big thumbs down for the WN311B Desktop Adapter.

It has to stand up - there's even a peelable sticker on one side of the router telling you not to lay it flat.
