broadband at home with a work computer

I have BT broadband into which my computer at home is plugged. I also have a laptop issued at work with wifi which tries to connect to my BT hub. However, it is looking, clearly, for my work's server. I put in my own WEP and I went to Tools-Connections and bypassed the server by unchecking the 'use proxy server' box, and I could connect to my own, so I was able to run my home broadband on my work laptop at home.
My network manager recently installed some updates on my laptop and now it will now not connect to my home wifi network, whatever I do. The link says 'limited or no connectivity'. He says he hasn't done anything, but he must have. How do I get it to connect? What is blocking it?

If your company policy allows you to connect to the internet at home - you should ask your network manager exactly what the updates were and enlist his help.

If compnay policy is not to allow you to connect to the internet (unless via VPN for work purposes) then the system may have been locked down to prevent that.

Do you have administrator access to the machine?

if it using some sort of wireless management software, disable it and let windows manage your wireless connectivity at home, it should work much better that way.

if you are already using windows to manage it, well you should just be able to rightclick on the wireless icon and select "view available wireless networks"

If its the work laptop and you bugger it up is the work IT staff going to string you up is a more appropriate question.

    ...a fight to the death.

Seriously: Should you be able to connect to the internet at home with it? Was it updated to stop people connecting to the internet at home? My works laptop will only connect via VPN software, if I mess with the software to connect to the internet the IT staff won't be stringing me up, HR will be discussing the misuse of the company equipment. Like peterb says the ask network manager about the problem.

Always ask first and get it it writing. It may be worth listing any changes you make to get it to work on your wi-fi. Once you have done that take the list into work and get the IT manager or who ever to sign it off saying that its ok for you to make those changes.

    Always cover your back.
