    Router Recommendation

There are just TOO many out there at the moment. I am after a new router for home. But my home is like a small office network! Currently I have a Netgear FVS124G router connected to Virgin Media. The Netgear has been the most unstable thing since I had it, constant firmware updates and resets.

Last night was a straw. My dad rung me at work saying no Internet access, he did the usual IT thing of turning the router and the modem off and on again, nothing. So I get home and start fiddling. I noticed that the lights on the router were more on than flickering. I discconected all devices and tried to reset the router. No avail. After much sweat, I managed to download the latest firmware using my Nokia N95 connected to a laptop. Uploaded it and reset the thing. It now sort of worked. I then fished another problem to my Windows 2003 SBE server that DHCP was buggered and DNS. Reinstalled those and it now worked.

Actually this has been the longest stint since I have had to do some major troubleshoot. I did more last night at home than I had at work in the last 2 weeks!

Oh yeah, new router. Umm I would like it to be Game console friendly. Have 2 PS3's (don't ask) and a Wii. Doesn't have to be wireless as I have a WAP already, but I am not fussed. Gigabit ports is a yes, and also torrent friendly for downloading um Linux. I'm not adverse to Netgear, and just because I have had a bad stint with this one doesn't mean I won't buy another. NOT Belkin though. Blaarrghh.

    Re: Router Recommendation

Why do you feel the need for gigabit LAN on the router ?

100mbit is fine , just connect it to a gigabit switch ( I assume you have more than 4 devices on the lan ? )

if you can live with 10/100 LAN ports then the draytek series of routers should suit you down to the ground. eg Draytek 2910.

My other switches are 10/100 at the moment. Have two 8-port 10/100. I plug the two PC's with 1000 nic's into the router for an extra boost to the server which has 1000 nic in it too. As the server is our storage centre, just made sense to have that bit faster direct connection.

Not heard of Draytek so am off to their site.

EDIT: hehe they look like something out DT department cooked up!

Do you get paid for saying Draytek?

I know I'm not pretty, but I am very VERY good ... So I can appreciate the analogy!

back in the days when I was supporting a lot of DSL users I wanted routers which where reliable and functional , these were head and shoulders above the rest

    Re: Router Recommendation

Well, Moby should get some commission! If my Netgear falls over again, I'll be getting a 2910.
