56k phoneline to a broadband modem?

    Hey
I'm buying a laptop (a mac). At home I'll have no problem with the internet, but when i leave for my place in Spain (which is in a little village), is where i see the problem.. The phone operator in Spain says that i can get 0,5Mbit to my place, but i don't get any modem. The thing is that i don't wanna pay 600 SEK (aprox 90$) for a 56k apple usb modem since i should be able to have a 0,5Mbit connection. So i guess the question is: Can i bring my swedish broadband modem(or any other broadband modem) to Spain and plug it in to the 0,5Mbit line? btw the line in Spain is a singleline, not broadband

omg this message is kind of messy hehe but i hope you understand the Q
Thank you for the help /José

Re: 56k phoneline to a broadband modem?

You wouldn't use a 56k modem to connect to a broadband (0.5mbit) connection.

If it is adsl, then you'd need an ADSL modem, (or cable modem for cable) to connect. Not sure what system they use in Spain however.

Can the operator not provide you with the suitable hardware?

Re: 56k phoneline to a broadband modem?

Well they said i just had to plug it in to the laptop modem, (which as far as i know only support 56k..). I'm not sure if the person i talked with meant that i can have up to 56k and not 512... but as i said, it's not broadband, it's onlöy singleway line, so if someone calls the connection will be lost.

sorry, not sure what you are saying...

if it is ADSL, you will need a ADSL modem or router
if it is cable, you will need a cable modem or router
if it is 56k, you can plug it into the inbuilt dial up modem on your laptop, and have fun watching sites load as quickly as a one legged rock climbing tortoise

Re: 56k phoneline to a broadband modem?

If you were told you would get .5Mb/s, then it will be broadband and you will need a broadband modem, either USB or built into a router to give either wireless connection or cable to the ethernet port. With broadband you will not lose the connection while making a normal telephone call.

If it is 56K dial up, you do need a dial up modem and the Apple one is probably the best one to buy. USB modems are often Winmodems and while they can be made to work with non-windows software, it can be difficult. The alternative would be a serial connected modem but I don't know if your laptop would have a serial port.

However you need to go back to Telefonica and determine exactly what service is available at that location, and what is provided (if anything).
