    Need a long Ethernet cable

My mate wants a very long Ethernet cable to connect his Cable modem which is downstairs to his pc upstairs. He does not want to go Wireless yet so is it a 'patch' cable that he should get? Also, if he got a Wireless router in the future could he then use the 'Patch' cable to setup the router if he couldn't do it wirelessly?

Yes and yes. He might want to consider homeplug - though at considerably greater expense.

Re: Need a long Ethernet cable

30m for £8 is actually really good, especially for branded cables.

Usually belkin are vastly over priced, so i avoid them.

Re: Need a long Ethernet cable

i have, always personally thought it was much better to buy cable in a reel (about 50m for £10 to £20) and crimp on your own connectors, that way you get exactly the length you want.

then again, i am just one of those people that despise cable clutter

Re: Need a long Ethernet cable

cat6 cable is thicker, and therefore harder to bend (hide), than cat5e

cat6 is theoretically capable of better transfer speeds though

Dont run it outside the house though without protection, the plastics degrade in sunlight but then again they do last a year or two and thas very cheap cable

Re: Need a long Ethernet cable

You can normally buy whole reels of cable really cheap but you need to connect the RJ-45 connector yourself. If you know anyone who is tech-wise or has a wired home network setup they may be able to make a cable for you

(Just one option you may want to consider)
