Re: Sky Broadband, Anyone Here Got It?.

customer service sucks untill you can get to stage 3. they are very good. the router isent that great in my opinion i had to change it 3 times in the end to get it up and running, but i am guessing that whoever you go with you may or may not have the same problem as it seems the netgear range is popular with many isp's.

speeds in general are good for me. for the price (16mb £10) i cant complain. so if u have sky TV go for it.

maybe in a years time i might look elsewhere if i have any more major problems. but fingers crossed i wont.

Thanks 5cupa, one final quick Q...do you get any webspace with them at all?. Got 100meg with Nildram which comes in handy for hosting photo's and stuff...

Re: Sky Broadband, Anyone Here Got It?.

I've just moved onto Sky medium (up to 8meg down). I am far away from the exchange however.

I currently get 30kb/s downstream and 30kb/s upstream.

I went through all the random testing with their support such as switching the micro switches and using the 'test' socket. At the end of that they said I was still within 10days of my activation date and I would have to phone back...

There is no web space provided. There’s a little online album thing but nothing can you can store files / websites on.

Biggest problem with the router thats given with Sky is the shocking wireless connectivity, lol. It's not too bad if you live in a small house - but I live in a 7 bed house thats had rooms tagged onto the sides so large internal walls and it really struggles at the ends of the house

The speed for price however is very good - not sure how far we are from our exchange but we get 16MBps (can't remember upstream offhand) quite happily

Well i live in a large house and the direction of the PC in relation to the router isnt good. The signal has to travel through a 7ft thick fireplace.
The Connectivity is excellent and is always between 87 -100%.

The Netgear is actually well known for its wireless connectivity and range. Maybe they just arent designed for mansions.

Have you tried swapping out the standard aeriel for a high gain version. I have bad signal problems with my Netgear 834G and am thinking about getting 1 of the 7db gain aeriels in the new year to see if I can finally resolve this problem.

The new Netgear router (DG934G) that Sky provide dose not have an aerial or even somewhere to attach one.

Re: Sky Broadband, Anyone Here Got It?.

As a new subscriber you might end up with the Sagem F@ST 2504 instead of the Netgear model. Both appear to be fine according to the forums I've viewed. They're both tied to Sky by means of locked firmware; if you alter the firmware Sky may lock you out as it breaches the agreement.

I've been a Sky Broadband for 13 months now and apart from their dismal first tier customer support, as 5cupa mentioned earlier, I've no complaints. Speed is pretty good, connection reliable and the price, especially if you're already a Sky TV subscriber, is awesome. I pay £5 per month on top of my TV package and almost feel guilty .... I did say almost

Ahhh i see. Its the new version.
I spoke to an 'insider' at SKY not so long ago and they said they were testing a new Netgear and a new Sagem router.
I was after a new router and they said i could have either of them sent as they had just finished testing both units. This was about 7 weeks ago.
I was recommeneded the Sagem router as they were not oo impressed with the new Netgear one .

I have the old Netgear on at the moment still as its working fine (i have 3) but the Sagem one i requested has sat in its box for the past 4 weeks as i havent gotten around to fixing it up yet.

If the new one is nasty, then call Tier 3 support and tell them its flaky and can you swap it out for the Sagem one. TBH...it looked quite good when i got it out the box. Its like a mini-SKY HD box.

Re: Sky Broadband, Anyone Here Got It?.

@Blitzen: You may want to double check that router as, apparently, a load got sent out before being scanned and entered into the system; human error unfortunately and it meant people couldn't connect as the MAC used as part of the authentication process wasn't enabled - the data wasn't on Sky's system.

Re: Sky Broadband, Anyone Here Got It?.

I wont comment on speed as thats down to the line but if ur line with sky is fine they are pretty good, Ive dl'd tons on the unlimited package (16mb), sometimes in excess of 150GB per month and never had anything from them

That being said, if u have issues, normally router with sky, then their first contact calls centers are fekin useless, bl00dy scripted reruns, that being said their tier 3 is pretty hot, when u can get hold of them

Re: Sky Broadband, Anyone Here Got It?.

Another content house here with Sky Max (sync'ed at 16mb/768k).

Although we don't really download that much at all considering the speed of the connection, it just works and very quickly at that.

If you're a gamer, you get a minimum of 30ms (typical 50ms) ping to anything. There's something called "max delays" which can be decreased if you're not happy with your ping, see SkyUser - The Unofficial Help and Support Forum for everything Sky! forums for more info.
