If it'll give you enough runtime then go for it. Again though, it doesn't have a network management card built in.

If you need the network management card (which allows you to monitor it remotely) then this is the one.

Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

If you are using it to hold up two computers, then the UPC needs to send a shutdown signal to both and the network management card may do that too, but I haven't researched this - it is left as an exercise for the reader Or I can do it for your company on a consultancy basis

    It does

Don't do what a colleague did though and plug the management card into a switch that wasn't UPS powered. The power went, as did the switch so the servers didn't get the signal to shutdown. Whoops.

Re: UPS for section of my network

I did that once as well. £3,500 of damage!! Only did that once.

Will add that to the list. Thanks.

If you don'twant to have to buy the card you can use the method here

What APC powerchute version will shutdown multiple computers? : apc, powerchute, computers, shutdown

I do that at home but I don't trust it for business.

Re: UPS for section of my network

Is the APC SMARTUPS you are thinking about ordering a ONLINE UPS or just LINE INTERACTIVE? Had a look on their site but they don't say [or I couldn't find]. If it is an ONLINE UPS then it sounds good [especially for the price you found via amazon]. If it is a LINE INTERACTIVE UPS then I would not recommend it. A UPS is a crucial [yet mostly neglected] part of an installation and anything less than ONLINE double conversion technology only causes problems. Example: you can connect the whole world [exaggeration] to a LINE INTERACTIVE UPS and it will not tell you that it is overloaded [because it is basically a fancy mutliplug as long as its AC source provides it with power] until you have a power outage - then it will go into internal fault and die because all of a sudden it can only supply a load at its rated VA value. A ONLINE UPS is always supplying your load by its battery and will tell you if you overload it even if its AC source is ok.

Re: UPS for section of my network

its Line Interactive but it does have overload warnings

Any advice on adding this to an already populated rack? Always been the first thing I normally add and removing the hardware will take way to long and be a nightmare of a job.

Yes! And of course (SOTBO) ideally it needs to go at the bottom of the rack! (particularly if the rack is free standing)

yes, the rack is clear at the bottom with the UPS rails already in place. (Its a 42U Compaq 9000 Series rack)

Just going to be very hard for 2 of us to put it in... don't want to topple the rack!

can you install it without the batteries, then replace them when the chassis is in place?

Well we had a power failure on Monday night and the UPS held the systems up until the power came back on.
