    Re: Netgear replacement

Oh? I've just installed one and its been fine - also got a DG834GT that I haven't used yet. Even with 4 people abusing the connection (XBox Live, Video streaming, BBC iPlayer, etc) it has been perfectly stable.

Well, there goes my suggestion of a DG834G. How about a Linksys WRT54G with the OpenWRT firmware?

    Re: Netgear replacement

Linksys have always treated me well, my WAG54GS has been going strong for the past few years, handling multiple wired and wireless connections, and good security, WPA, MAC filtering etc.

+ Linksys being a division of Cisco cant be a bad thing!

Well thing is I've had it for a number of years now and the last few years seemingly it drops its connection with no notes in the error logs that suggest why it's doner it, but everytime I have to reboot it...drives me insane, thought I'd tried evberything

    Re: Netgear replacement

I fell out with Netgear a long time ago. Generally use a WRT based router now, or if needed, a Draytek

    Re: Netgear replacement

I bought a Belkin a couple of weeks ago because my netgear died and it was cheap. It's not very good, stay clear of them

I think I'll get a Draytek in a couple of months

As much as I love Draytek, if you don't mind tweaking and playing, the WRT and alternative firmwares are brilliant

    Re: Netgear replacement

Yup, another recommendation to stay away from Belkin. Mine would continually fall over under even mild use

    Re: Netgear replacement

My DG834GT has been perfect, haven't had the slightest issue using the DGTeam firmware. What's nice is that you can get them really cheap on eBay (Sky branded).

    Re: Netgear replacement

Just got a DG834G v2. It is totally rubbish, and if it were not our only router it would already be on the way back to our supplier for a refund.

It can only manage a few torrents at best, should you dare have say 5 up and running it falls over practically instantly. It is also dropping packets all over the place, something that has only happened since we installed it.

Just got off the phone to our ISP (Zen). They were great, but the chap there basically, and politely, told me to just get shot of it.

I've not heard of or looked into DGTeam firmware, I think I will take a look at it tonight to see if it could save me the cost of a another new router.

EDIT: oh, the DGTeam firmware is only to convert Sky branded stuff into standard. No good for me as it fails to sort the underlying issue I have with our current kit. I should add that the router has the most up to date firmware going, so thats no use either. Damn Netgear, I was burned by them in the past, should have learned from then.

    Re: Netgear replacement

The DGTeam firmware isn't for converting anything, it's an alternative firmware that doesn't support old routers like yours.
I tried a DG834Gv2 recently then put it in the bin. There has been a v3 and v4 since then, it's old and rubbish - not comparable to current models.
