as far as i can gather, the 50mb will run on a different part of the bandwidth spectrum so would hopefully free up some the existing bandwidth. so if there were then only 3 tiers, 10/20 staying as is and 50 on it's own things might improve a little..................time will tell.

    Ahhhhh...ya know what i meant.

I am with SKY atm but i got to admit, if Virgin was actually dealing in what they say they do i would move.

I have a Virgin box stuck to the side of my house so should be easy enough.

    Yeah, I'm pretty lucky
I constantly max my speed out with Virgin, 24/7 (unless the throttling kicks in of course )
I guess that's the advantage of being surrounded in an area full of old people

well im not sure about the technology that is used but it is likley to be 3 tier.

20mb the top speed at the moment was 10mb

10mb medium at the moment is being rolled out from 4mb
    Where's my upgrade?

so expect 2mb to move to 4mb and then 20mb to 50mb (or they will add it as XXL broadband)

trouble is that the 50 meg will need new modems as i believe that the current newest version (the ambit 255) can handle upto 30meg downstream. so all the people who want the new service will need new kit (and i can see vm charging for it to i.e. like the v+ install charge but for sacm's). and there's the price, although nothing has been released i can see it being at least 50 notes for this. there is no way i'd pay that for it, i mean just to d/l things a bit faster. my main priority is latency for gaming, and though it's not ideal but to pay more for something that (and i know there's no proof either way) in theory may not give me any better latency times is just plain madness .

the only benifits we may see is that vm may or may not slacken or remove the throttling, which doesn't bother me as i d/l all my crap overnight. and charges may come down a bit. both would be nice but can't see it happening.

yep for 95% of us it would be pointless, but it would have been nice back in the day when i was a student in a shared house!

Exactly - many people complain about not always being able to get full 20MB speeds. Well duh - who says that the computer serving you the file has a decent enough connection or resources to serve you the file that fast? You test your connection on it's own, you need to test it within the VM network.

Then again I might be biased, as I also seem to be one of the lucky ones. My 4 meg service is rock solid. A couple of times I've noticed a little bit of sluggishness with web browsing at peak times (like 6pm when everyone has got home from work and is checking their emails etc), and the rest of the time it's a consistent 4 meg service that runs perfectly.

Hopefully I haven't spoken too soon.

Thank you. I suppose it puts me one above those who mistakenly believe they're getting an uncontended service and expect to be able to run it flat out, for however long, whenever they like.

To continue the motorway analogy, it's a bit like expecting my road tax to fund me my own, personal M1 that I can drive on at full speed regardless of what everyone else is doing.

Same here - i must be lucky as well, my VM has been allot more reliable than any phone based ISP's i have had - with the bonus of not needing a phone line thrown in

Come on VM, get London 4MB->10MB rolled out asap - you know it makes sense

nope, the older ntl branded 250's and the virgin branded 255's are both ambits, no real difference in them, only change in the 255 is it's black - has virgin media on it and it's ethernet only as virgin dropped usb support on the new modems.

dunno mate, i know that different modems were used according to weather you were in an ex-ntl or ex-telewest area, thats the only reason i can think of.

    I have a question......

I understand the "throttling" and fair usage policy blah blah blah........but I run some internet distributed computing projects that can easily chew through hundreds of gb a week.

So my question is........as long as I ran said projects during the "off peak" hours would I be ok or would they send me a sh***y letter?

Currently I don't do much during peak hours and gently chew thru 20gb or so at night.

No point me paying for so-called unlimited ISP if I am not permitted to utilise it.

as far as i know, no sh***y letter would be involved , the only thing you have to remember is that if you did go over the limit and trigger the throttling then it would still throttle you for 5 hours even if the peak time has ended i.e. if you break the cap at say 8.30pm you will still be throttled until 1.30am and so on. so it is unlimited in terms of d/l and u/l stuff(better after 9pm) as all the throttle does reduce your speed (i have 20meg which would be reduced to 5meg and thus is still unlimited), i have been known to d/l 4-5 films overnight at maybe 20gigs worth as an approx and nothing said.
