    2 Internet connections!

A friend of mine has just gone for the 16Mb Sky BB pack. He's also been paying his friend next door for use of his wireless. What he was wondering is, is there a way to implement the 2 so its kind of 1 connection and he can use both at the same time?

Yes, but it will involve spending a wedge more cash and I'd be very doubtful that it would be worth it. You kinda have to ask why he'd want to?

Spare PC with 3 network cards + pfSense.

pfSense Open Source Firewall Distribution - Home

However, I've never tried this myself.

Is said friend really in a position to be setting up and administering something like pfSense though? Is it worth the effort for his requirements?

While its possible, like said above it will require some significant effort to get it setup. On the whole internet connectivity is Active/Backup rather than bonded connections to be honest.

Adaptive routing really occurs in the cloud layer or in much larger organisations than someone's home.
