ADSL IP Profile and Router Stats

From what I understand, the IP Profile is what determines your connection speed.

So right now my IP Profile is 2500kbps but my route is showing a downstream rate of 3552kbps. Does this mean I could ask to be moved up an IP profile or is this down to how BT set up their IP profiles?

Re: ADSL IP Profile and Router Stats

BT's IP profile determines your download speeds. This is set automatically everytime your router resyncs. If your router is connected 24/7 (like mine used to be before I found out from my ISP about disconnecting overnite) then the profile will not change. Unfortunatley your sync rates can go up and down also.

My line is currently sync'd at 3712 but my profile is 3000 according to "speedtester.bt.com".

After a successful resync the line will be automatically be reprofiled to download at your current connection. BUT, please be aware that this can go down as well as up. Also, it can take upto 3 days to get back speeds that you lose from one bad connection (I know from personal experience). My line sometimes inexplicably syncs at approx 2000kbps, which then causes my profile to limit my downloads to 1750 kbps. Even if my next sync is back to 3500+ my line will go through successive reprofiles of 2000, 2500, 3000 each time my modem resyncs .

Things I did to increase my sync rates :-

Replaced my master socket faceplate with an adsl master socket faceplate with inbuilt filter. These are available from "adslnation.com"
Disconnected all my internal extensions and went digital as extensions can act like "aerials" and pick up all kinds of noise which will affect sync speeds (and thus affect profile download speeds).
Replaced my external cable (which was a piece of untwisted rusted crap) with a twisted pair cable to BT spec CW1128)

Anyhow, first apologies for not providing links to pages direct as this is my first post and the admin nazi's won't let me . Second, sorry for rambling on but the crux of the matter basically is your download profile will probably always be slightly lower than your sync speeds as this is how it works. Unless you have an uber stable line in which case I hate you

Re: ADSL IP Profile and Router Stats

I'm having a similar problem with my ADSL due to a copper line fault which BT wouldn't acknowledge as a fault. For the last 2 weeks my connection speed has dropped from 6+mbs down/448mbs up to less than 2mbs down/64kbs up which has resulted in not only my IP profile dropping but also my SNR margins being increased. They now at long last fixed the line fault but it can take around 10 days for the SNR margins to drop and they drop in 3db steps so I'm looking at a 20+ day period before my sync speeds will get back to 6+mps and there's not a lot that I can do about it.

For IP profiles I was under the impression that you had to have synced at a higher speed on 3 separate occasions over a 3 day period, from what I gather this would mean that just leaving the router on for 3 days won't result in a higher profile as you'd need to switch off the router and let it re-sync, hope that makes sense.
