O2 Box replacement?

Hi all,

I was a bit surprised by various slatings the O2/Be box... that is until now... I'm starting to have problems with it myself, it seems to loose the connection rather a lot especially if the wifi access point is in use. I'm guessing its down to heat? Is it difficult to extract the login details etc from one of these things? off the top of my head I don't remember seeing any login information on it?

Can anyone suggest a good replacement for this? I, stupidly, gave my netgear D834Gv2 to my sister... I'd be after something that is stable/reliable, doesn't break the bank and is easy to port forward.

I'm open to other features to, print server, media streaming and the like.

Grateful for any suggestions

Zadock

Re: O2 Box replacement?

The Beboxes/O2boxes (Speedtouch 585 and 780) have a habit of just freezing for no reason whatsoever - they act all "hey, the 'net's working great!" but nothing is actually routed.

The Netgear DG834GT (often Sky branded from eBay - mine was £25 inc delivery) with the UberGT firmware is the most popular Bebox replacement. I use one myself - flawless, but it doesn't do anything funky like print serving/WDS/etc. It's just a router.

Re: O2 Box replacement?

The D834Gv2 is pretty poor (older chipset) so don't worry about that.

I definitely recommend a Sky branded DG834GT like smargh suggests, although the DGTeam firmware is better. It's a rock solid device, I've not had a single issue with mine. You don't need any login information, take a look at beforum.co.uk .

Cheers guys, looks very much like my old DG834G and that was easy enough to setup.

Re: O2 Box replacement?

There is a firmware for the o2 box, ends in .2 check your router and see what fm you have already, but the .2 fm is rather hard to come by

Looks like I need to contact O2 for that...

I'll give that a go first before I go spending money. Cheers

Re: O2 Box replacement?

I was wondering why people buy their own router as O2 provide one until I saw this thread.

Thank you all for the information.

Re: O2 Box replacement?

Anyone figured out how to unlock an O2 version? I have 6.2.27.2 on my router, but am experiencing some problems. There's some mention 7.x may be better (or worse) so I'd like to try.

So I took a look at the "recover.bin" from the O2 recovery CD. It begins
0000000 B L I 2 2 3 Q H 0 nul nul nul nul nul nul nul
4c42 3249 3332 4851 0030 0000 0000 0000
0000020 nul nul nul nul O 2 nul nul nul nul nul nul nul nul nul nul
0000 0000 324f 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000

34d1 1f86 280f 8bea aeba 9714 0d5e 3ddb

If I then compare to the original 7.4.1.7 :
0000000 B L I 2 2 3 Q H 0 nul nul nul nul nul nul nul
4c42 3249 3332 4851 0030 0000 0000 0000
0000020 nul nul nul nul 0 nul nul nul nul nul nul nul nul nul nul nul

0407 0701 0000 0000 0000 5f01 2f00 8fb4

b38d f96d 7121 ea9f 3b20 dc51 e61c f06e

I notice:
a) The model number is the same
b) "0" in the original, whilst "O2" in the o2 version appears further down
c) The version number is in text from offset 0x40
d) BANT-R is present in both

So I tried fixing up b in my own copy of the firmware. However whilst the o2 recovery tool happily flashed it, the process did not complete. After flash I ended up with just just the power light on along with the INTERNET light red, flashing, and the modem apparently dead.

My guess is the modem refused to load the firmware that had been successfully flashed.

This "trick" appeared to work on the HH... or at least a similar trick.

Ideas?
