Despite what the tabloids say, its cheaper than buying a new house.

    done! Thanks mate!

All this came about because I'd noticed my bandwidth was around 4000 kbps - nowhere near the 6-10kbps that several sites said, what with exchange being a mile away, etc. I plugged my modem in downstairs - woooah, more speed! (I haven't tried it in the master test socket yet...)
This hot girl came over to myspace last night, she twittered my yahoo till I
googled all over her facebook. Ask Jeeves...

Thanks for that. I have a mate who is a Network engineer - admittedly he works for The Man in The Corporation, and rarely would they have to deal with plastering etc, but still he'll be good to help me lay it all.
I actually suspect (if i do indeed buy this house) that the walls are pretty bloody solid and won't be easy to go through, so i might be drilling through floorboards, or maybe adding some plastic stripping stuff (what's that called) along the edge of skirting boards to hide cables.
I do recognise though the value of laying as much as you think you can when you do this, to future proof etc.
A mate of mine even suggested running some HDMI leads, but given that i might be talking about 15 to 20 meters or more i doubt will happen.

Here is a check-list of what i think i'll be getting:
    Cable (Cat5 or Cat6)
    Wall Plates
Mounting boxes, type will depend if in wall or on top of wall, (in wall ones are plain metal, top of wall ones look prettier).
End Pieces (if i'm doing the simple ugly route)
    Crimper / Punch Down Tool
I'm commenting on an internet forum. Your facts hold no sway over me.

    Re: Homeplug adaptors?

    get Cat5e, rather than Cat5...

Don't bother running HDMI, run two runs of cat5e instead.

    Re: Homeplug adaptors?

My house is mainly cat5e cabled, bar 1 room - where I'd never need a network...

which is where the homeplug saved my bacon - just works.
