Never go to whois, and check for the availability of names until the very day that you want to buy it. I believe there is someone on the other end of that form, and they collect all the queries you type and register them just to squat so you have to buy it off them.

I have a domain atm And someone has registered the .com version. I emailed them about it and they said they`d sell it for 400 dollars :O
Its for a project that I`ll prolly be bored of within a month or 2 so 400 dollars is a bit steep loil.

just say never mind. Pretend you're not interested and ready to walk away. they might lower their price. i doubt anyone else will want to buy that domain.
