    connecting with 2 routers

ok ok I'm sure all you are very tired of me by now, but if you have any patients left, i'll try not to use them up in this thread.

    say I have 2 computers on a switch (A & B)

And on that switch goes to two routers (A & B)
Each router has its own modem (yes, I have 2 different ISPs)

How can i make computer A go to router A,
and computer B go to router B?

At the moment, i turned DHCP on in router A,
and off in router B so they don't conflict, but i could easily change it that.

Is there a way to make this configuration work by the routers settings, so i don't have to change anything in the computers?

    thank you

    Re: connecting with 2 routers

Easiest way I can think of is to only connect computer A to router A and only connect computer B to router B

If each computer needs to only use one routyer why complicate things and connect both to both?

if you only have 2 PCs.....dont use DHCP on any of them

set a different default gateway for each machine.

or if you have 2 groups of computers , use different subnets with a different DHCP scope , then have a machine ( or a real router ) do the nessesary routing between the subnets.

Moby, i have more than 2 computers, i just use 2 for this example.

If I turn DHCP off in both routers, how do i get an IP assigned to my computers?

    Thanks

    Re: connecting with 2 routers

how do i group the PCs by subnets? can one of the routers do this, and then forward group B to the router B? I don't want to complicate the route by making a PC in group B go into router A, and then have to be re-directed back out, through the switch again, and into router B. It seems it would only slow my pings.

What I wanted to do was just somehow have router A act as the default default gateway for all PCs, but for PCs in "group B" they will be assigned an IP and handled exclusively by router B, without having to go through router A. Is that possible?

and also, if they are in different subnets, can they even communicate with eachother over the lan? They need to be able to communicate on the gigabit switch level, without having to be routed from subnet A to B through the megabit router.

    thanks

    Re: connecting with 2 routers

Don't bother with DHCP, just set the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS server(s) on each machine separately. The DHCP server on your home routers are not particularly configurable.

    Re: connecting with 2 routers

Use static addresses as mentioned in this thread and you'll be fine. EG

    Router 1 Gateway = 194.168.1.1
    Router 2 Gateway = 194.168.2.1

    PC 1 or group of pc's 1 = ip address range from 194.168.1.2 - 194.168.1.254
    PC 2 or group of pc's 2 = ip address range from 194.168.2.2 - 194.168.2.254

Set the gateway on each pc as 194.168.1.1 and 194.168.2.1 respectively (depending on what router you want them to use) and the job is a good on.

PC 1 for example connecting to router 1:

    IP ADDRESS :194.168.1.2
    SUBNET MASK: 255.255.255.0
    GATEWAY : 194.168.1.1

PC 2 connecting to router 2

    IP ADDRESS :194.168.2.2
    SUBNET MASK: 255.255.255.0
    GATEWAY : 194.168.2.1

    Re: connecting with 2 routers

To make things a little easier, i would turn off DHCP on router A then you will only have to manually configure the PC's that you want to use router B. Whichever router will be used the most should use DHCP meaning less work for you.
