    Router recommmendation

Right, I've had enough. The Sky-badged Netgear BG834GT is a load of turd. I'll rip my details outta it and would like a new one, as less moolah as I can spend. Wireless too, with a few LAN ports on the back. What d'you reckon?

You cant go far wrong with a Linksys product, mines been very reliable and stable for the past 2 years, and they've come down alot in price now.

Isn't it possible to hack the firmware back to standard 834gt?

ah. read the other thread below, on this very subject. Am I right in remembering that Linksys is the 'consumer' bit of Cisco?

woa woa woa. tell us what your ills with the current router are and we'll try and get you fixed up. is this a BG834GT or a DG834GT? every google link seems to point at a possible spelling mistake. but the DG834GT is one of the "very good"

get an "n" router if you can afford as they are the future and "G" will be going out in about 2 years

    Re: Router recommmendation

    I'm leaning towards Linksys.

I have 2 laptop's which use wireless - I have a main (cabled) rig which I use or downloads etc. The laptops both have G wireless built in, so a N router would be a waste of money.

I'm thinking the N router will have a higher output power/range and would be better wouldn't it? Someone correct me if I'm wrong in thinking this. I have DG834GT and yes it's wireless is ****ey. For me only it seems. I had to get one of the Linksys PCI Card Antenna's (Larger than Netgear's teeny one) and put it on the router, then get a flexible Antenna, those little circle ones with a little antenna and had to put that on the pc upstairs. It seems to be working fine. Anyway if you still don't want to stick to the DG then get one with 2 antenna's at least then it'll have better range/signal. My WRT54G never failed me anywhere in the house. Pity DD-WRT firmware isn't available for it's ADSL routers.

    Re: Router recommmendation

    Speedtouch are great imo

im using one now, (ST 546v6) i only have it because before i dumped zen as my isp they were having serious issues with people using linksys kit, check google and you'll see plenty of proof, however if your not with zen it shouldnt be a problem i suppose.

Ive had netgears that were terrible and the support is near impossible to understand when calling

SO you are saying speedtouch routers are crap but then saying belking are good....

i`ve been working in the ISP industry for the last 4-5 years and Everyone I have ever worked with hate Belkins, They have a habit of stopping assigning DNS for no apparent reason.

The Speedtouch 510 router v4 was not great especially due to its strange way of factory resetting it but the newer routers(536, 585 780 etc) are some great routers with really easy to use interface for beginners but a plethora of more advanced features for people who want to do more.

no, no no no no no no no. ask anyone on "be" what they think about speedtouches, they may not think it right away but in the end they all realise its pretty unusable and best kept in its box as a backup.

the only reason you can get away with saying that is that the 546 doesn't have wireless to cause it to overheat. although im surprised you haven't noticed it having a seizure when you have too many connections open.

I'm on a Be* and my speedtouch is kack (780WL), you never know when it's broken. Sometimes on high syncs you'll get resynced because of the low SNR and thats fine as long as you get connected again. Sometimes it would and sometimes it would just stop, until a power cycle is done. Then it would stop with these problems and make you think it's fine. I used to be one of those peeps who read about the Speedtouch woe posts, and I used to think to myself "I must be a lucky one with mine working just fine". The thing is it never happens!!

But when it starts annoying you off that bad till you reach your limit then you'll realise. I can't even use it as a wireless bridge as well! £100* my ass, isn't worth £25 if you ask me.

    * £100 referring to how much you will be charged if you damage or don't return your Speedtouch on Be. I'd rather have a DG834N delivered on activation day than that p.o.c.

    Re: Router recommmendation

OT - but moogle, do you have the 834N? and if you do have you tried the new firmware? i updated my wn121t at the same time so that might have something to do with it. but im getting a far stronger connection now (constant 240-270) than i did with even the custom firmwares. and it does QOS and WDS now too
