    Vista and Sky router.

Basically a friend has just purchased an Acer laptop from PC World. The spec is as follows:

    1.8 Celeron
    1gb RAM
    Vista
    Too much bloat ware
    Norton AV/Security

Now, he cannot connect to his Sky internet. He has plugged the laptop directly to the router using a cable - no joy. He can see the wireless network but cannot connect. Now I'm going later to try and fix it. I'm thinking:

Norton security could be screwing with it (as it cannot connect via a hard link).
    Some vista setting
    Heard uPNP can cause issues

    Any other advice?

Edit: Apparently someone told him that the Atheros wireless won't support WPA? Surely that cannot be correct?

    Turn off Norton Internet Security.
    It interferes with everything.

He brought his laptop to badminton last week and the first thing I did was uninstall it - but by the time it had finished the battery had died.

    Re: Vista and Sky router.

    Its not Vista fella.
Its either Norton (probable) or his laptop.

I have the SKY router connecting to my laptop and my PC 24/7 and its all good.

Just a case of finding the connection the entering the WEP key.

BTW...is it a V1 router (a white one)? If so, reboot it then try to connect.

    Re: Vista and Sky router.

I'm nuking it and putting XP on.

I couldn't get it to connect with or without security.

I tried wired and wireless. It kept mentioning something about media disconnected when I used ipconfig /all.

To be honest though he's better with XP IMO as it's a single core celeron with 1gb of ram.

Three other computers (two wireless laptops) connect fine and all use XP.
