at the beggining of my year in private accomidations in aberystwyth the internet connection was preety good (considering it was shared between 7 of us) speeds werent that great but they were more bearable than they are now and video clips would buffer at a watchable pace.

several months ago a power cut caused the router to go to default settings, we had a technician out, he fixed up the connection and we had access again but with 1 major problem, all downloads over http or ftp or anything wouldnt go above 30kb/s, and video clips take about 10 minutes to buffer a 2 minute clip

i have tried a variety of things, looked up different MTU settings etc etc just to see if it was something stupidly small causing it, but ive lost patience with it and as i cant phone eclipse about it as our landlord wont give us the details (they keep referring us to their "goto" technician, who in turn is either 2 busy or refers us back to them) so i have come here for any help

from what i know we are on an 8mb eclipse.. and im guessing its unlimited as we havent had any extra charges from landlord about it.
PPPoA connection (cant change it)
default MTU of 1492 (had better pings at 1480 but connection/router became unstable)
netgear dg834 v2 (with latest firmware)

1 major problem is 1 of the guys we share with has a wireless router in his room and he hasnt got dhcp turned off so we are all on static ips to connect to the main router, im not sure if this would cause the download limits, but this router is not on constantly and even if i limit the ip range to not include it the downloads are still at 30 or less

I have read in the forum that eclipse really sucks, but im stuck with it (thankfully only for a few more weeks) but would like to enjoy these last few weeks, stress of exams is enough without the annoyance of having a download take hours.
so any advice would be great (going to see about buying a replacement router and backing the settings up on to that tomorow to see how that goes)
