Static IP help (Belkin Wireless router).

This is probably a bit of a strange one but I'm looking for a bit of help for a friend.

A friend has asked me how to set up a static IP address on their Belkin Router, they're completely clueless so they were looking for an idiot proof guide.

I told them to check out this port forward guide

    http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-vista.htm

The guides there are generally step by step guides and I've always found them to be useful. Now having looked at the guide it seems to be setting up the static IP via the control panel, and instead of being able to edit the IP address at the last step they're getting a different pop up that says:

The name service provider and network address can be changed for the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service.

then a dropdown with these options :
    Windows Locator
    DCE Cell Directory Service

To be honest I have no idea what that means. But I was wondering if there's an option to set up a static IP address on the routers settings page? I use a netgear router and I set the static ip addresses up there, not in the XP control panel.

So my question is, is it possible to set up a static IP address via the Belkin router page, if so how? Would someone be kind enough to give me a quick run through to pass on?

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Static IP help (Belkin Wireless router).

does he mean static wan ip or lan ip? I guess it's lan ip because he wants port forwarding. what router model is it?

easiest way to do it would be to set it up in windows but one problem is that if that pc is off and another pc requests an ip from the dhcp server and it takes that ip it will conflict, ie you'd have to manually set all the ips on each pc that will connect to the router so it's best to do it through the router page.

    Thanks or the reply.

    It's the F5D8231-4.

I assume it's lan ip, since yes, he wants port forwarding. I thought it was best to do it through the router page, but I have no idea how to set it up on a belkin router, since mines netgear and I have zero experiance with belkin.

Hence me hoping someone with a belkin router can give me a guide, which options need to be changed ect.

Assuming it is on the LAN side, then the easiest way to do it is to set the IP of the PC in Windows, but make sure it's outside of the DHCP range, so that the router won't assign the same IP to a different machine.

I use a DHCP range of 192.168.0.100-255, and assign static IPs between 192.168.0.1-99.

you set static IPs on the computer, rather than the router.

Re: Static IP help (Belkin Wireless router).

    Assign the IP address
To set a static IP address:

    1. Open Windows Start menu.
    2. Open Control Panel.
    3. Classic view: Open Network Connections
Category view: Select Network and Internet Connections, and then Network Connections.
    4. Double-click on your active LAN or Internet connection.
    5. Click Properties.

This opens the Local Area Connections Properties window.

    6. In the General tab, highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item, and click Properties.

This opens the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.

    7. In the General tab, click Use the following IP address, and enter: - IP address. The static IP address you want to assign to this computer.
    - Subnet mask. Subnet mask used by your router.
    - Default gateway. IP address of your router's default gateway.

    8. In Use the following DNS server addresses, enter all the IP addressses for the DNS servers your router uses.

    9.Click OK.

(For you an example will be - IP Address: 192.168.0.2, Subnet mast: 255.255.255.0, Default gateway: The IP of your router,DNS server should also be your router.)
    Then:
    10. Click OK to close each window.
    11. Restart your computer. (not really needed but can solve some issues)
    12. Then, check your IP address again, to make sure that the changes were applied.

Re: Static IP help (Belkin Wireless router).

Thanks for the replies, and the guide. Problem being He's already tried this, but can't seem to find the DNS servers. Using ipconfig /all isn't listing them. So he has no idea what to put in the 'use the following DNS server address' bit.

I have a netgear router and configured my static IP addresses on the routers set up page, not in XP's control panel, so I assumed it could be done with all routers, I must have been mistaken.

Re: Static IP help (Belkin Wireless router).

he can find his dns servers in his router page. like in your netgear it shows your ip (wan) subnet and dns servers. if not just tell him to use opendns ip addresses instead.

all you have to do is point the DNS to the router this will forward it on.

I'm sorry, but they both mean absolutely nothing to me. Can I have the idiot version?

Re: Static IP help (Belkin Wireless router).

The IP address of your router will usually be your DNS server, as Jay has said - it gets DNS Server addreses from your ISP, and forwards requests - so enter it as the preferred DNS server, and you can leave the alternate one blank I beleive.

If you don't know the IP Address of your Router, you can use the OpenDNS ones (opendns.com) which are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.

You can see in Jay's earlier post where they should be entered

Thank you, that would be greatly appreciated, and sorry if this is the stupidest question but can you tell me how you find the routers IP?

Also, will the settings be different depending on what version of windows? He's using vista btw.

Re: Static IP help (Belkin Wireless router).

tell him to goto start->run and type cmd then press enter.

Then tell him to type ipconfig /all and in there you will see something like this.

Navigate to your NIC (Network Card) which is connected to the router and look for that setting the Default Gateway.

As for the OpenDNS servers, if you go to your connecctions TCP/IP properties like Jay has showed (it's a bit different in Vista)

you can put the DNS servers in the boxes like so

and the top bit you'll have to fill in depending on your routers ip range.

Lets say your router assigns you 192.168.2.2 then you want that ip to remain static then you put that in the IP address box, I leave the subnet mask to auto (it self fills it in) and I'd put the default gateway as the router ip which can be gained by the instructions above. Then for the dns servers I'd put the open dns ones, so leave them how they are at the bottom.

Then that'd be it. After clicking okay the pc will try to reconnect and use that ip and hopefully there won't be any conflicts. But like I said before if the static ip you give is in the DHCP range it can get taken and when you try to connect you may have a conflicting ip etc.
