network hardware

I've decided I want my network like this

But now I need to decide on the hardware for it.
A homeplug system that can stream HD etc, a good router, and an explanation on how to use VM on winxp for QoS etc.

Any help much appreciated

I use netgear 200Mbps homeplug adapters. They are very good if you plug them directly into the wall and have decent electrics.

The house has just been rewired so that shouldn't be a problem

If the PC is being used as a firewall and for QOS then surely is should sit between the router and all other devices.

So you should have something like:

ADSL -> Router -> PC (with two network cards) -> Switch ->>>> all other hardware.

I'd go for ethernet rather than powerline - seriously the performance and latency is a lot better

I agree with DR but as we all know its not always possible to run cable.

As for the firewall it all depends how you want to set it up really but yes its best to run a cable to it and a cable from it to the modem.
