    INTERNAL PCI MODEM - Have they moved on since v92

    I need to replace my PCI Modem. I only use it for faxing from the PC. I have a fax machine for printed items & Router for B.Band.

    My existing item is:
    Harmonics (conexant) HSF 56k v92.
    1/ I was wondering if things have moved on since the V92 specs ?
    2/ Only want a cheap item - what's available out there ?

    Mine is cpu driven, so may look for a hardware item.

    thanks all

    Dynamode?

    Have you considered something like an Internet fax service?

    isn't fax technically limited to 14.4 anyway?

    at any rate, with DSL on the line, you're not gonna exceed 33.6 (v92 and the techs it's based on require a 100% analog line)

    thanks folks,
    NICHOMACH: That item looks o.k,,,, and about the right price.
    I havn't looked at Fax services for many a year,,,,,,, didn't fancy it then,,,, don't fancy it much now.
    I don't do a great deal of faxing any more,,,,,,, but 90% of it is straight from the PC.

    DIRECTHEX: As far as I'm aware - yes - faxes are limited to 14400bps.
    I do have it on a dedicated anologue line (along with the fax machine).

    Since my initial post, I have removed the modem, checked & cleaned the pins etc & looked for obvious faults. I put it in a spare PCI slot,,,, but it saw this as a new kit, & I couldn't remember how to set it up.
    I put it back in the old PCI slot (with fingers & things crossed) but it is still the same.

    I'm not quite as jiggered as I thought I was, as i've learned to use the fax machine to send PC items.

    I still want a new PCI item at some point - it's just that I didn't know if the spec's had moved on at all since I bought this one.

    thanks all for reading this.

    The fact that a modem uses your CPU... when you have a modern CPU... means nothing.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();
