    Virgin media broadband throttling question...

Well im with virgin on their large package(at 4mb, stillno upgrade ) and have been with Telewest-->ntl/blueyonder for ages, i was wondering about this download limit, ive been hit with it so many times( and i guess alot of other people do) so that 5% must be made up , but anyway i was wondering how it works in terms of, if i download 2gb of data in the peek time does that mean after im capped first to 1mb for 5hours if i continue to download during it and hit my limit again will i get capped again? the timing is 4-10pm iirc so if i manage to download 2gb in the 5hour cap would it mean im stuck on 1mb for a sad 10hours? Also, anyone else seem to notice it really isnt a 1gb limit because i get capped at 600mb and sometimes 800.

    Any replies are welcome .

I believe the way it works is that if you hit the limit at any point in the applicable time, then your connection is throttled for 5 hours from that point only. That is to say, subsequent downloading has no additional effect.

Not sure if you've read this page, but it might explain it better than I can :-)

thanks for taking the time to post, i did look at that page but it wasnt really helpful in terms of finding out how they throttle you. I was throttled at approximatly 3:30pm and its now 11pm, thats way more than 5hours and ive only downloaded 1.2gb so far, so annoying because 1mb is just a pitiful speed compared to 4mb, why can they half it to 2mb >.<.

Thats the point! You might think !"I can live with 2Mb/s, so I'll just carry on as normal - they want you to feel the pain so you don't do hit the limit again!

very true, i will be going to 2.5mb/s as soon as theyupgrade my area, its really annoying as their list doesnt even have plymouth on it and in the past 2 weeks no new areas have changed from tbc to a date . Well about an hour ago my speed went up again, finally so i finished downloading my game patches now .

That is pretty wierd. Firstly, it should only be throttled for 5 hours, and secondly the throttling (according to that page anyway) doesn't apply for one hour starting at 3pm...
