Exclamation Getting the most from my ADSL

Right, after a real roller coaster ride getting ADSL to my new house I've got some. (In a sentence... ordered TV+Sky BB 31st July.....ADSL live today)

    Supposedly 16MB from Sky.

    Day 1 and I've got
    Code:
    DownStream Connection Speed 6432 kbps
    UpStream Connection Speed 768 kbps
What should I do to get that up to something more realistic.....?
Yes I know that it's all dependent on my distance from the exchange etc etc blah blah blah....but since it's in this training period what should I do to maximise this ?

I am currently just using the filters provided with the sky provided DG834 as my order for ADSLnation filters had my card declined
    Thanks!

During the training filter the rate will fluxuate. Obviously right now you are 10mb shorter than what you are supposed to get so I'd just wait and cross your fingers. I hate to be brutal but I switched from BT because they did not deliver on any level - when I switched to BE broadband I went from 6meg to 18meg (ADSL2) and it cost less. Nuff said.

I doubt you would get 16mb tbh anyway.
With that package you are paying for unlimited usage more than the speed

I just left SKY. Although i found them very good, O2 are very very good and i have found an increase of 4mb due to the putting me on fastpath.

Plug your modem into the master socket and disconnect extension sockets as they generate a lot of line noise.

Of course, doing that isn't that practical, but at least try the first half.

And try not to mess with it too much, or the BRAS will think the link keeps dropping due to line quality, and throttle it back some more.

As long as they're 'wired' ones like this (which most are now)... rather than this one ... they'll be fine

And the 'wired' ones are available cheap anyway.
They may be cheaper still elsewhere... but I paid just £1.80 (+ £3 P&P) a pair for mine... on Amazon

Re: Getting the most from my ADSL

If it is Sly LLU then there is no training time and the chances are that you won't get much better from them, as with all ISP's its 'up to 16 mb'

Incidentally, what's wrong with the latter mentioned MicroFilter? I bought a ZyXel the other day, as doesn't look so out of place, and seems to do the job fine?
(Not saying you're wrong, just curious!)

Re: Getting the most from my ADSL

I looked at thisv earlier - I think the training period only applies when the ADSL onward connection is via BT - not via an LLU service. If you are signed up to Sky - then no, there is no training as such.

The wired filters (if they are good ones) are impedance matched on both the ADSL and the phone ports, so the signal strength is maximised./ The cheaper ones only filter the phone port. Not a problem if there is nothing else plugged in, but it can be under poor line conditions where extensions are in use.

Re: Getting the most from my ADSL

Had some cr@ppy microfilters in my early days of ADSL, make sure you don't use cheap ones where the ring capacitor has been removed, we didn't hear phone calls because of that. Microfilters from ADSLNations are highly recommend AND can improve speed over some of the cheaper microfilters given by ISP.

Also read some articles that the line used to connect between the phone socket and the ADSL modem can be replaced with the CAT-5 type, which probably could squeeze you a few more bits from the modem, that is if you want to go as far as this .

Re: Getting the most from my ADSL

i wired in a prefilterd master socket and saw a jump of almost 1mb with sky as you dont need any microfilters anymore. if u want more info I have a spair one i could sell on.
