    Router for Virgin Cable Broadband

    Hi,

    Just asking some advice.

I have virgin media cable broadband and a netgear 4 port switch for my two xbox 360's and PC. The Virgin Modem is plugged into my PC via USB and shares the internet connection to the two xbox's.

I'm looking for a router so I dont have to have my PC on to go on xbox live and also for the added security.

I've brought one router that is no good as it's an ADSL modem/router. [I know very little about networking!!]

I would some suggestions on a decent router to buy for this setup, I would like to stay with netgear products if possible

    Thanks,

    Wrsooty

Yes it does, but it is only a modem and does not do any routing so you can't connect it straight to a switch of wireless AP.

You didn't say if you wanted wireless or not. Without wireless, the Netgear RP614 will do just fine and can be had for between £20 and £30. For wireless there is the Netgear WGR614 which can be had for between £30 and £40.

Generally speaking ADSL routers will say ADSL in the name, ones for cable are usually just "broadband routers"

couldn't help mentioning this puppy! If your into PC bling then this is tip top!

    http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=379601
As far as I can make out! and this is to be confirmed, it comes in ADSL/Router, Cable/Router and plain
    wireless Router versions.

nice throughput if you got a NAS box, all with no cables for your consoles (if you buy all the wireless bits for your kit)
although price is a little steep bargains can be had on ebay.

you have to have your head missing not to be able to set this up in less than 5 mins all wireless connections made, setup is so simple.

    Higgs...Out!

now i dont totally trust belkin, and id rather a browser interface than running across the house to look at a small display that has probably frozen anyway if i need to look at it.. but my god isnt it cool as hell, and for £45 or so over a netgear N it should be really

This seems to be covered weekly

Buy a WRT54 Linux capable version. A million times better than the netgears above.

The non-business netgear kit that I've had has been quite temperamental.

I would second the WRT54GL (NOTE: NOT THE GS) with Tomato.

I use a Buffalo WBR2-G54 running Tomato 1.21 and it's not been switched off / crashed since I upgraded.

Look at the features a WRT54 has (with something like Tomato) compared to the Netgears and you'll get your answer
That and they are infinitely more stable. Although it wasn't cable, but my ADSL Netgear went in the bin.

Virgin Media told me that they have some issue's with Buffalo router's for some reason. I think he was talking out of his rear end at the time TBH.

I have a WRT54GL with DD-WRT on and it is very stable and the wireless signal is excellent (the broadcast strength can be adjusted. It can also be used a wireless card if need be.

Another idea is contact Virgin as they may supply you with one for free.

Re: Router for Virgin Cable Broadband

Have to recommend the netgear wgt624v3, got it for £35 from pcworld since the belkin router was poor to say the least(it droped wired but not wireless!) so got money knocked off this one, similar to my older netgear that was a refurb and was on its last legs after 5years atleast, wireless wasnt working well but cable=solid. Netgear are great, avoid belkin at all costs IMO as the hassel isnt worth it when there are other brands.
