Connection Speed

Hi

I have 2 seperate connections from 2 seperate ISP's at home.
Sky Broadband Max Package - Up to 16mb
AOL something or rather - 2mb

Now my question is actual speed, running a speed test on both gives me..

Sky - 4.5mb d/l
AOL - 1.8'ish d/l

I'm just wondering, is 4.5mb within reason when paying for a completely unlimited 16mb connection or should I get on the phone as soon as I can?

It depends on the quality of your line.

If you can get your line stats out of your router and enter them into This site you should get some idea of your theoretical maximum.

Try putting your phone line into the test socket and see if they are the same speeds. If so then you could have an external cabling issue which BT will need to sort out. There's loads of info about this sort of thing at

I went from 7MBPS to 12MBPS once I'd established I had a faulty cable and got BT to repair it and then SKY to reenable my line properly.

I phoned up Sky and spoke to someone then I changed the filter and it went up to 5mb although my upload stayed the same at 768kb/s.
I tried unplugging all the phones and using the test socket but no change there.

Thing is, when I first signed up to Sky I was getting around 10mb with 768kb/s up, then it went to 8mb and then 4mb, now back to 5mb.

Oh and they did say on the phone that my line could only support 4mb but I don't understand then why I was getting 10mb/s to begin with.

The joys of ADSL :S I second skyuser.co.uk, I practically lived on that site after I got sky to address some issues, the people on there are top notch. Generally tho if your not a heavy downloader then downgrade your package to mid-8mb as long as you dont think you will exceed the cap. I only get 3MB but pay for the Max-16MB as it is uncapped and allows me to queue a shed-load without worrying about my bandwidth exceeding the cap. But if you didnt get much higher from thetest socket then there is little you can do, especially if ur line is with BT.
