    slow gigabit ethernet

I'm having speed problems on my gigabit network, but only with my main rig. The network works fine, but i get really slow (3-4MB/sec) when transfering anything too or from the IP35-pro machine. All my other machines including my NAS box have good transfer rates.

I guess it could be the settings of the NIC, i currently have the speed set to Auto-Negociate, but i have also tried 1Gbps Full Duplex. I have tried various different Jumbo frame settings, currently disabled until i find the route cause. All other settings remain as default. I have checked connections and changed the cat5 cable to make sure it was not that.

When i start a transfer the speed is good to start and then drops sharply. Like i said it settles at around the 3-4MB.

Can anyone suggest a fix, or experienced similar with the IP35-pro. I have not found any similar reports.

Driver on your rig? QOS enabled? Is your switch managed as logging in to it may help you track the cause.

That board has dual gigE lan have you tried the other port?

    Re: slow gigabit ethernet

I disabled IPv6 on the IP35 machine (Vista box) which seems to have resolved the problem. Transfer rates much more stable now. The problem was Vista not the mobo.

Technically the problem was either the driver or IPv6.

    Re: slow gigabit ethernet

cat5 isn't the best cable for gigabit speeds no matter what anyone says. yes it will use 4 pairs, but still you're using a cable that can't really handle the frequency or crosstalk, you'll be lucky to get full bandwidth out of cat5 at gigabit speeds over any distance. Cat5e would be better choice. cat6 would be even better as it not only has the frequency tolerance, but also is better protection against crosstalk.

Does *anyone* these days use CAT5 over CAT5e?

    Re: slow gigabit ethernet

he prolly meant cat5e, i don't think you can even buy cat5 and i doubt it would sync at 1gbit with cat5
