    IP Address help

Well, tonight i couldn't get on the net. Tried everything. No joy. Rang Virgin and they suggested a few things, nothing. Ip address was being set by PC. Guy didn't know what to do. I didn't either so i formatted PC, put Vista 64 back on and alls well.

Now, if this happens again does anyone know how to solve the issue? I have the ordinary Virgin modem, Ethernet, not wireless.

When you say that the IP address was being set by the PC do you mean it was ending up with a 169.254.xxx.xxx address?

Sorry, I'm on my iPhone so typing a guide even that small is a pain. Google it.

    Re: IP Address help

I dunno about anyone else, but I certainly can't diagnose any problem where the info is just "couldn't get on the net" and "ip address was being set by PC." You've nuked the original install, so you'll never know what the problem was.

The probably could have been many things. Malware, IP misconfiguration or corruption, network card drivers, dodgy network cable which was fiddled with while installing Vista...

I think he just wants suggestions in the event it happens again.

Select the "Start Button" then in the search box type "cmd".
Then at the command prompt that appears type "ipconfig /release" and press enter, followed by "ipconfig /renew" and enter. You should either get given a 192.168.xxx.xxx address or get some sort of error message back.
