o2/Be and some help with ADSL

    Hey all.
Have been with Virgin Media for the last four years, on a steady 10MB/512K connection. Just recently the price has got silly and the STM anoying. So I'm looking to change back to ADSL.

Is a toss up between Be and O2. O2 are cheaper (have a PAYG phone for extra discount too), so is there any reason I would go with Be instead?

Also I understand my line on standard ADSL will support about 6/7MB. Are there any sums to guesstimate what I might achieve on LLU? (is still different isnt it, as had a go at the VM lady telling me thats all I could get and they rocked for fast internet) Screeny below from Samknows.com.

Cheers all, know it gets asked alot and there probably is no definitive answer, but would be nice to expect a speed increase both down and up, tbh would love to see all that 1.3Mb upload.. mmmmmmmm upload.

Re: o2/Be and some help with ADSL

I'm 370m straight line and 1.4km by underground cable, I can get upto 21Mbps with Be

Unless you game heavily (fastpath on Be for lower pings) then go with O2 since their packages are much more feature filled, and with the O2 phone discount you can get the 20Mbps/2.5Mbps package for good money

O2 and Be are the same company essentially, so you're getting the same connection. If you have an O2 phone and can get the connection cheaper go with them.

Spot on, thanks. Was hoping someone in a similar position would post. I'm assuming or should that be hoping, the actual cable length is gonna be around that here too.

That settles it then, O2 it is, BT line is going live hopefully before the week is out. Don't think I'll benefit from fastpath or 2.5Mb upstream atm. So save some monies and give the £10/month Premium offering a go. Cheers gents.

Yep yep. IIRC the only thing that differs is that O2 doesn't provide the ability to switch profiles and such things like FastPath.

Re: o2/Be and some help with ADSL

    Thanks guys!

BT Line got switched back on yesterday and I was able to do proper tests atlast. Be reckon 21Mb and O2 20Mb. Going with O2 Premium as at <£10/month, figure theres no way I can go wrong! Figure I'll see most of, if not all the lovely 1.3Mb upstream too.

As soon as I've grabbed an O2 sim and topped it up today, shall whack in my order, bye bye Virgin!

Re: o2/Be and some help with ADSL

Dont forget to use Quidco or Topcashback to get a bit of money back

Also if you want the best speeds of your line get a DG834GT or N netgear router and when you use the custom firmware you can permanently set the SNR and the router holds the line sync longer than the speedtouch router that is provided.

I'm 690m direct and around 1.13km by road but from my line attenuation it says my line is around 2.03km but I could still get 16mbps+ (2.2mB/s computer download speeds) with fastpath, the netgear router and some snr tweaking

That was when I was on Be* but now I've switched to O2 I'm getting the exact same speeds as I got when I didn't have fastpath turned on (14mbps+) and my pings aren't the lowest all the time (like they were on fastpath/Be*) but still decent

Re: o2/Be and some help with ADSL

Thanks Moogle, and yep put it through Quidco for fifity quid.

Well my only regret is not doing this sooner!

    According to the router... Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,343 / 22,873

    and a speedtest...

Well chuffed! Gonna try and get this fancy bridge mode setup now, O2 router is deffintly lacking on config options and keeps asking me to run the stupid CD.

Re: o2/Be and some help with ADSL

I've just signed up with O2 from Virgin too.
tbh I didn't have a problem with the actual service but their billing department have been doing my head in ( for about the last 6 months every monthly bill I 've had a different package cost necessitating a phone call to CS to sort) - & they are no longer competitive.
Can't really go wrong as I'm no worse off financially & I've got a 30 day money back guarantee if the ADSL service doesn't come up to par imo.

    I hate your speeds
