Hibernate a server

Hi,

I'm wanting to preserve an uptime with my server, sometime in the future a carpet needs to be fitted into the room its located in and I was wondering if hibernate would work if the PC was not plugged in? I assume it won't due to it needing power for stuff to be stored in the RAM and all data is lost from RAM when power is not on.

if you hibernate I think it writes a snapshot to disk ? why not test it on somethign else ?

Yeah I think I'll test it on this PC beforehand.

Arghhh, just checked the machine, its 2003 server and it doesn't even have a hibernate option within Shutdown, damnit.

This is for a windows system - as you are concerned about uptime (any particular reason?) woulkd I be right in thinking the server is *nix based? (I suspect the same definitions apply though)

Edit - cross posted! Can you add the hibernate function (although normally you wouldn't expect to hibernate a server!)

I just found hibernate in power options and enabled it, wasnt enabled by default though but it seems to be there now.

Its a windows 2003 server an old p3 but my record with windows uptime is 268 days with 2000 pro and I want to beat it with another windows system.

Why bother?
Uptime on a windows server should rarely is ever be more than 1 month anyway

You'll be just cheating yourself
I once put my laptop to sleep for one month and it kept the uptime.
Surprised you could even get to 268 days.

The best uptime I ever had with multiple linux servers (dedicated) is about 210 days, regardless of the provider.

I just want to see if I can beat my previous record, thats all. I think I can do it the machine is rock solid stability wise and its just this carpet nuisance thats hampering things.

The PC that got to 268 days under 2000 pro was a dual p3 667 with 256mb rambus. This uptime was halted for the reason of a new carpet lol like usual.

I think the hibernate may work.

Nope, I dont install and updates whatsoever, I just run them how they are installed straight from the CD. Saves a lot of hassle and I never have problems with security but it might well be suseptable to a hack, behind NAT and SPI firewall it shouldn't have any issues IMHO.

I would install patches in a corporate enviroment but as this is for only home use, I dont tend to bother as I've never had a single issue regarding not patching.

I went out to an NT4 server last year (PDC) that hadn't been rebooted for 453 days (if memory serves). First job was to restart it as it had begun to slow down due to memory leaks.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but... if the server's not available then it's downtime whether it reports that or otherwise. Or is this just some e-peen thing?
