    Re: Cable wireless router

Hang on a sec, just thought back to your OP.

You only have a modem right? There for, to get more than one PC on the network, you will need a router.

A modem on its own cannot handle more than one IP address. when you connect the modem to your PC directly, the PC takes on the IP address of the modem, the modem is just shuffling the bits back and forth. The PC is part of the internet directly.

When you have more than one PC, you have a private network, that needs to be connected to the internet (or any other network). This is what a router does, it routes data between to two.

Then there us NAT, Network Address Translation. This give you the ability to have multiple PCs on your own network sharing the same IP address given to the Modem (or router if it has a built in modem, like with ADSL) by your ISP.

So ignore the comment about a switch or a hub, you need a router. So you may as well get a wirless one. if it doesn't leach to your room, then too bad, but you would still be able to use your laptop in the lounge or kitchen or something if you wanted.

    Re: Cable wireless router

    Thats what we're here for

So going to back to the original issue: you can get cable routers from about £20, but I'm betting they will be a hung of junk.

A reasonable Wireless router is going to set you back about £30, so for and extra £7 ish, I personally, would go for the Edimax N I linked to above. If the signal does make it to your room, then bonus! if not, well, most of the rest of the house will be covered.

if you set it up and just about managed to get a signal where you wanted it, there are thing that can be done to help. A high gain antena is one.

Scan have a bunch of edimax wireless antenas that work with just about any wireless AP or router.

    Re: Cable wireless router

Settled on this should have it in a few days. I'm just curious if the signal does not reach my room is it best to go with home plugs or some kind of wireless booster??

With the home plug would it be as simple as connecting one up to the wireless router ports and then the other in my room (ie. no software needed to be installed for them?)

Edit: Done a bit of searching and found this Its ideal for my soon to be set up in my room! Will be able to connect my pc, laptop and 360 up!! Anyone used these before?

    Re: Cable wireless router

One more question is there just a simple wireless booster that can just be plugged in wiht no need to install stuff??? Otherwise it looks like those Belkin powerline things would be the better option.

    Re: Cable wireless router

Wireless repeater i think your on about, the big problem with a lot of these are that they cost a packet, a lot don't support encryption other then WEP.

    My setup at home is

    Cable goes into upstairs office
    Cable Modem
    Cable Wireless Router ( WHR-HP-G54 )
    Homeplug
Homeplug for the XBox 360 in main living room
Homeplug in front room with a wireless to eth converter

    Does us fine
