    Gigabit switch

Looking for a 16 port gigabit switch for the new flat.

Anyone got any low cost recomendations? first thought was the Netgear ProSafe GS116 from Scan. But eBuyer have a couple of interesting beasties.

Tenda 16-port Gigabit Switch. they also have a 24port Tenda for less than the Netgear as well.

The other option is to go higher end: Cisco Small Business 16-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch. Again moving to 24ports is only another £42 so thats tempting. Never going to run out of space on that

How are 3Com these days? 3com Baseline Switch 2824.

The choice was easy until I looked on eBuyer, Scan only really have the Netgear that is interesting.

The Netgear Prosafe range have been rock solid for me for the last 4 or so years if it's unmanaged you're after.

    Re: Gigabit switch

Yes, I'm a fan of Netgear - always worked for me. It is (slightly) cheaper here, but there is delivery on top.

    Re: Gigabit switch

I bought an SR2024 (big version of the Cisco you mentioned) for work last year. It was rock solid with relatively high throughput (~15 video post production machines and 4 servers) and we intend to use the Mini-GBICs to link to another switch in another building.

Unmanaged GbE Switches are pretty hard to judge, considering they all do essentially the same function with few differences. The ProSafe will probably do just as good a job and save you a fair bit on the Cisco.

    Re: Gigabit switch

Sounds like the netgear is the most recomended then.

    Thanks guys.

but by that argument, the Tenda is the best option

    Re: Gigabit switch

Absolutely, but I prefer to buy a known name such as Netgear or Cisco/Linksys for support and resaleability.
