Alternatives to Wired for LLU - Gaming etc

Hey, I've been running on wireless to my router for about 4 years. Its alright I suppose but the house can get busy and people seem to get in the way. I'm moving from AOL to LLU with Titan ADSL so I dont want to waste such a premium quality of connection. I've heard powerline networking has become a lot more effective. This set by linksy that scan sell looks like a good deal.

I just want to keep my ping down for gaming, Any thoughts?

Don't bother if you have (a good) Wireless-G or Wireless-N. Total end to end time, the 2 to 3 milliseconds added by going Wireless is negiable, bandwidth that can be piped (for G) is about 2.1 MB/s.

If your connection is unreliable or just plan slow (to many clients maybe) then yes powerline is an option, but the good ones are quite expensive, and the cheaper ones tend to have worse bandwidth throughput than my WiFi (1.2MB/s).

If you can lay Ethernet Cat6, do it. Even if it means running ten or twenty metres of cable over doors, up walls with cable ties, etc, it will still perform better than most (there are some good ones) PowerLine systems, and WiFi.

Maybe try this !! Have not been able to find anywhere that sells it, but I think Amazon will have it at the start of August.

Sharing your internet connection will have the biggest deleterious effect on your latency. Get a high quality router which has proper QoS.

hmmm, well I'll try my wireless for now and then maybe route the cat6 or even phone line to the attic which I will be moving into. Thanks for the tips, unless if something drastic happens to my wireless I wont go powerline.

btw, will the linksys ones realy perform cheaply? I though they were a good brand for such things. Like would it have been a real downgrade from my standard G?

Re: Alternatives to Wired for LLU - Gaming etc

From what I know powerline networking isn't great. Wired is best in terms of performance but you need to lay cables etc but Cat5e should be easier to lay than 6 and should offer similar performance up to gigabit Ethernet and should be cheaper. But I'd go for wireless over powerline.

    Edit: I found a thread discussing Cat5e/6: http://forums.hexus.net/networking-b...rk-advice.html
