Jumbo Frames

I've read some where that if you enable jumbo frames that if you have any devices that do not support them then they should be in a different subnet.

Reason I am asking is that I have 3 desktops pc's, 1 laptop and 1 Xbxo360

The 3 desktop pc support gigabit and jumbo frames but the laptop being wireless and the Xbox360 don't.

Is it a case that I set up a dhcp scope on my router to dish out ips to the above 3 desktop pc's on a different ip range / subnet range and stick the laptop / 360 on another ip range / subnet ?

Would this cause issues for me sharing files between the laptop / 360 and the desktop pc's

What routing equipment would you be using (and consequencly, does the routing equipment support jumbo frames?).

Yeah if your switching hardware can't do jumbos then it's all going to fall apart anyway.

I've never run into any JF interoperability problems, generally I think drivers are clever enough that if the device at the other end goes "huh?", then JF gets turned off.

However, the throughput benefit isn't that great unless you're doing something that really needs to squeeze the network for all its got.

It's a buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH which supports upto 9k jumbo frames

Not familar with that router, what features does it have in the terms of DHCP? How much can you configure your DHCP clients? Because you may have to go static routing if you want to put some clients on one subnet and everyone on another.

Have you tried just turning on Jumbo Frames and seeing if your XBox and laptop have a hissy?

And what precisely do you need Jumbo Frames for, where is the bottleneck you are experiencing? As Steve said, it's only a good thing to do if you need to squeeze your network for every onuce of usable bandwidth you can.
