Moving files across a Network.

Hey,

In my home network I have one computer running XP and one running windows 7. I am trying to transfer some files to the XP computer whilst I reformat the Win7 one. (hopefully I'll be able to figure out how to transfer them back afterwards.)

The problem:

When I try to find the folder that the files are in from the XP computer, I can see the Win7 computer but I cannot explore it. It creates an error : "The network path was not found".

The windows 7 computer cannot see the XP computer. I have all firewalls turned off.

Do you have file sharing enabled? It's off by default.

you will then have to set up a share on one of the PCs to either pull the files from, or push them to.

I have turned on filesharing on both computers and have set the appropriate file to share.

ahhh the joys of cross networking between different versions of windows. I have posted a few times when i have had issues and nothing ever worked except time... it eventually just started showing up for no apparent reason.

Can they ping each other by IP and hostname? Can you \\ to the PCs? Are they both part of the same workgroup?

On windows 7 turn OFF password protected sharing, it's usually on by default

Passwords are off.

The computers can ping eachother by IPs but not by \\NAME s.
Any known fixes for this?

Have you tried connecting using the IPs? eg, \\192.168.0.5\share

If you can ping with the IP and not the name, that's worth a try.
