Re: Getting BE Unlimited cheaper? / BT Broadband

Right I'm going to have to hope lots of people are online here to reply because the guy from BT is calling back at 8:30 as the offer ends at 9pm today!

We had another call from BT. They are offering an 8mb service for £7.69/month with an 18 month contract, with no price rises (i.e it's not the offer on the website where it's only that price for the first 3 months). The guy tells me that our maximum line speed (as it's a BT line) is only 9mb, which is what we get, so when we joined BE and they told us our theoretical max is 17mb, that was a load of rubbish...someone is lieing, but who?

The BT offer also changes to a 20mb service in the new year which means we will probably get 9mb or more again quite soon. Also, there are 250 mobile broadband minutes a month inclusive which would be great. The only problem is, I still don't know how good BTs service is. With BE we never get downtime, no traffic shaping, it's a perfect service, but BT is a tenner a month cheaper which is really quite a lot.

Actually there is 1 more problem, it's only got a 10gb/month download limit...BE doesn't show you how much you use, so I really have no idea what we use, 10gb doesn't sound much to me but the guy at BT (obviously) says most people don't use 10gb and it would easily be enough. Tbh this is the bit that puts me off the most, because who knows what will happen within the next 18 months? I could want to watch loads of HD content on iplayer within that time and that'd use quite a lot I guess.

    Anyway, any advice, comments?

    Cheers!

£10 quid a month is quite a lot when you live in London with not a massive income However I've just been on to BE tech support and they've told me what to do to fix my router and we now get 19mb which has swayed the deal (along with reading lots of reviews damning BTs service). Sorry mr madduck, I will never ever consider such a thing again!

Just to end the story, I told them I was considering going to O2 and I now get be unlimited for £12 a month rather than £17.50, exactly what I was hoping for !

Care to share? We used to get about 13mb on BE with the router all the way upstairs. We had this speed for a couple of years but this year it dropped significantly. I've now had to move the router downstairs to the master socket and use our wireless access points to get internet access upstairs. This works fine but I'd much rather have wired internet upstairs.

Post in the Be* forum, good support.

With the router upstairs was it in an extension? If so perhaps that's your problem.

Or did you run a long modem style phone cable up the stairs - they're rubbish plus perhaps electricity cables underneath? I had this, sited router downstairs and ran Cat5 cable up the stairs - no interference from power cables which run under the stairs.

Yup, we had an extension cable all the way up to the top floor. The thing is it was fine before and it's hidden away in such a way that it shouldn't get damaged. If it was my house I'd just lay a network cable up to the top floor but it's not, so I can't

Sorry it's taken so long to reply. Actually it was just simply restarting the router, there had been some problems with my line the previous day so the router had set the max speed to 9mb for some reason...I'm sure that's not much help for you though!
