    New ADSL Connection Speed Problems

I've moved home recently and just got the ADSL connected on friday. The probably I'm having is that it has connected at about 2mbps, the same kind of speed I was seeing at my old house, but the new house is significantly closer to the exchange so would expect much better speeds. Also, I think the previous owners said they were getting '6 megabytes' internet speed, which I would assume they mean 6mbps, and there's no Be/O2 or Virgin available here.

My initial thought for why it is slow is that when a router is first connected it goes through a period of negotiating a speed with the exchange, but the router is not doing this, instead just sticking with the speed it had from the previous connection. But... I don't really know how that process works so could someone that knows a bit more about it let me know if that sounds plausible or just a load of rubbish! Didn't want to reset the router and have to reconfigure it if it's not going to make any difference.

Also, if there's anything else you can think of for why it's going slow feel free to let me know, thanks!

Here's the information on the line from the router:
    Code:
    			Downstream Upstream
    Data rate (Kbps)	2112 288
    Noise margin (dB)	12.8 29.0
    Output power (dBm)	17.1 11.9
    Attenuation (dB)	40.0 22.5
According to the attenuation values and this graph, i should be seeing 6-7mbps so fits with what I heard from the previous owners.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

    Ermm..

Looks like you are on a fixed rate than than adaptive adsl connection. This is often done on 'dodgy' connections to improve stability. Your's appears not to need it.

The 288 up is a dead giveaway. Ie 256 up and 2m down.

Get on the blower to your isp and say BT has mullered, they'll understand when you give them the specs above. If the dont, ask to speak to something fuether up the chain.
