Question Connect 2 routers using wireless only

Right I need some advice on this. Its also my first time to post here so if its not in the right section please let me know.

I bought an XBox 360 Elite for Christmas and I do not want to pay €80 for a microsoft wireless adapter

I have 2 dsl routers here in the house and I was hoping to use 1 of them as a defacto wireless adapter for the XBox.

    The routers are:
    1. Belkin ADSL 2+ Modem with wireless G plus MIMO Router Model number: f5d9630-4
    2. D Link G624t

I tried setting up the dlink as an AP and that worked resonably well al long as i had them connected via a patch cable. But I dont want to run cables I want them to connect wirelessly and thats where I am coming undone

What I want to happen is that I will connect the XBox to the dlink and the dlink will be connected (wirelessly) to the belkin which is acting as my gateway.

I have set them both up with the same SSID and the same WPA key
I have switched off DHCP on the DLink and all its WAN features. I restricted the DHCP pool on the Belkin and set the DLink ip address outside this range. E.G. Belkin DHCP pool is 192.168.1.2 - 1.50
Dlink IP address is 192.168.1.51 btw the subnet is 255.255.255.0 and is fairly irrelevant for this exercise.
The Belkin has a setting to allow it to recognise a wireless bridge and allows me to lock it in using its MAC Address.

    Any ideas anybody

Re: Connect 2 routers using wireless only

To get this to work, you will need to be able to set up one of them (whichever one connected to the xbox) as a wireless bridge. I don´t know if either of them can do this, but that should give you a starting point for some research.

Or instead of paying the full €80 for the official MS bridge, you could get something for about €30: http://www.lambda-tek.com/components...prodID=1189738

Re: Connect 2 routers using wireless only

I have one of those free LaFon devices acting as a bridge on my 360. It works a treat. I had to flash the device with a DD-WRT firmware though.

Hard-wire a laptop (with WiFi disabled just in case) to D-Link device and check whether it bridges the connection.

Thanks iamipodman. I did actually get tem to talk wirelessly after I disconnected the ethernet cable but then the connection dropped. There is a spare belkin cable router thats a belkin in my parents house. Might try that with my belkin dsl router. Perhaps the 2 same (ish) devices will stay connected.

    Thanks again for you help

    Don't understand...You must have RJ45 cable from 360 to D-link router.

I did have them conected via a patch cable but when I removed the cable the connection held wirelessly for a few minutes then dropped. I had connected my printer via a patch cable to the dlink router and could still use it/ping it/log on to its embedded server for a few mins.

I want the dlink to conect to the belkin wirelessly and yes the 360 wil be conected via a patch cable to the dlink

Re: Connect 2 routers using wireless only

The wireless interface of D-link will filter (bridge) the connection to one of its ethernet interfaces which has a device attached to it, i.e., your 360.

Easiest way to test is to get a latop and connect a straight RJ45 to d-link and check whether it gets connected to the network. The NIC of the laptop will change its name from "local area network" to "your SSID network name". You should get an IP address and get connected to your LAN.

If you dont have a laptop, unplug your desktop from belkin (main adsl router) and plug it to the d-link. If you can get an IP address it proves it is working.

    I hope it makes sense.
