    DHCP advice needed

I have recently set up a Kyocera printer an a home network. Everything went very smoothly for the first couple of days, but now the PC and the printer can't 'see' each other. I think the problem is because there is now a miss-match of IP address between the PC and the printer 192.168.0.3 v 192.168.0.4. I believe the Netgear hub handles DHCP which, if I understand things correctly, allocates IP addresses to anything attached to the network. Do I need to change my setup to force fixed IP addresses? Will this cause other issues elsewhere?

    Thanks for any help offered.

You need to reserve the IP address on your router based on MAC address so each time printer asks for it, get the same IP all over again.

another option would be to put it on static? Makes more sense in case your router doesn't support suggestion above..

    Hi Tusker,
I had this problem as well. I tried setting a reserved IP address on my router (a dlink adsl modem/router) but every time it gets rebooted it ditched the settings.

Setting a fixed IP address at your printers interface will solve this problem because instead of the printer asking the DHCP server for an IP address it just says "hello network I am here at this address"

Now a potential problem here is this: If you give your printer an IP address of 192.168.0.3 there is a chance that if the printer is powered off the server will give another device this address. Then if the printer powers on and also assumes the same IP address fun & games will ensue.

The solution to this is 2 fold. Simplest way to do this is to assign your printer an ip address of 192.168.0.200 This IP address is so far up the range it will never conflict. Unless of course you have in excess of 200 devices on at the same time I doubt that though.

If you are feeling adventurous you can also limit the DHCP pool on your router. Simply put you tell the router to limit itself to a set number of IP addresses.
Example:If your router has the IP address of 192.168.0.1 then it is administering IP addresses 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254.
If you restrict the upper limit to for instance 192.168.0.50 the router will not issue an address any higher than 192.168.0.50.

So your network will work away fine and your printer will be where it is supposed to be at all times.

    Regards

    Re: DHCP advice needed

I tried allowing the router to only use a limited range of IP addresses (10 to 254), and then allocating an address for the Kyocera below that range - 6 . But I was ignored (!) and it was allocated an address within the restricted range - 14. I have now restored allowing addresses across the full range, with 6 reserved for the Kyocera, and will see if that works.

    Thanks.

When you say you alocated the Kyocera an IP of .6 did you do that at the printer or at your router?
If you did allocate it at the printer, is the subnet mask correct i.e. 255.255.255.0. Because if thats not right that would cause issues.
Did you update the print settings in your OS to reflect the new IP address?
When you say you were ignored, in what way? Could you ping the printer? did you try to log into its webserver. I am trying to find out is the printer is getting an IP address.

This is a 3 step process:
    1. Set the printer with a static IP address of 192.168.0.110, with a subnet of 255.255.255.0
    2. Limit your router to assign IP addresses upto .100
    3. Change the settings in the Printers Control Panel in Windows to reflect the IP address of 192.168.0.110

Might be easier to delete the printer then add the printer using the add printer wizard.
Alternatively - Start - Control Panel - Printers - Kyocera Printer - Printer Properties - Ports.
Select the port that is ticked and edit it. Insert IP address of 102.168.0.110 & apply.
    May need to reboot printer.
