    secured wifi network

    hi i was away in dorset this weekend and got into a wifi but when i tryed to connect well look:



    just wondered how this was done, network planing im gwessing they used access points and made some kind of rule on the network.
    becouse as soon as i tryed to get to google it just sent me to that page

    I suspect it'll be a RADIUS server. I supose TACACS/AN Other AAA Solution could be used to perform web-authentication, but I'm not sure. I have seen guides to set up RADIUS servers like this though.

    Such a server will sit between the AP and the Internet and require a particular host to successfully authenticate with it before it will allow packets from that host to get out on to the internet.

    I have zero real word experience of setting up such services (give it a few months and I will, hopefully - it's on my list of things to do!) - but I'm pretty sure that it what you're seeing there.

    It's a captive portal, you need a U/N and password to access the Internet.

    Yes you need to have that accounts in order for you to access the web.

    Oh right. Well you could use something like m0n0wall or pfSense for example, both include captive portal. Have a look at this setup guide for pfSense: http://doc.pfsense.org/smiller/Captive_Portal.htm
